Scotia Gas Networks

We are the UK’s second largest gas distribution company and our networks provide natural gas to 5.7 million customers in Scotland and the south and south east of England. We respond to reports of suspected gas leaks 24hrs a day, 365 days a year regardless of who you buy your gas from. To maintain and improve the safety of our gas network, we operate an ongoing programme of mains replacement, refurbishment and repair activities.
Mains Repair
With approximately 74,000 kilometres of gas mains, we take our responsibilities and obligations very seriously. We have a duty to ensure that all pipelines are maintained to an efficient state and good repair.
Preventing damage to our plant is key for us. The ultimate aim is to achieve zero damage to our plant and all utility apparatus. Our mission is to ensure safe systems of work are in place to protect members of the public and operatives and to reduce the amount of damage to our plant.
Mains Replacement

We have, in agreement with our regulator OFGEM and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), embarked on an extensive programme of gas mains replacement across our networks to replace all iron pipes that are located within 30m of any property, which includes the replacement of the individual services connecting premises to the mains network. We have a considerable amount of work to carry out and we appreciate that this will inevitably cause some disruption.
However, the plastic pipes we are putting in the ground now, if left undisturbed, have a lifespan of at least 80 years, so when the work is complete people will be able to carry on taking gas for granted for years to come.
We are committed to working closely with the local authorities and police to plan our work so that it causes the minimum amount of disruption to residents, road users, businesses and traders. Wherever possible, we will also be using modern 'minimum dig' techniques which allow us to lay gas mains without digging lengthy trenches and saving time.
