I work at the Basildon site in the Future Technology Group (FTG) as a Scientific Consultant. We work in collaboration with the lines of business to identify capability gaps and future customer requirements, which can be met by new and emerging technologies. Through collaboration with academia and other research centres such as QinetiQ and DSTL, we investigate and develop such technologies to product demonstrator level and beyond.
To date, I have been involved in a number of diverse projects within the umbrella of active imaging. My projects have covered areas such as sniper detection, computer modelling of imaging systems, imaging through atmospheric turbulence and novel methods for increasing image resolution and field of view. I am currently leading an advanced research programme on Computational Imaging, which involves a number of the areas mentioned above.
From my first day on the job, I have had to draw on the knowledge and skills gained during my PhD. In particular, my background in laser physics and nonlinear optics and modelling experience within these areas has provided me with an advantageous insight into the physics that underpins a number of FTG projects. Furthermore, this experience coupled with my academic contacts has allowed me to develop and initiate projects of my own, something which is actively encouraged within FTG. Working with and alongside a number of engineers, I have gained an appreciation for the practical aspects of the work we do (which sometimes conflicts with the desire to do 'pure' science). I feel that this provides a good balance to my academic background and is important in the development of my role.
In terms of development, I have been given a number of opportunities to increase both my technical and soft skills, through training courses, self-learning and the Transnational Graduate Programme. For example, recent training has developed my skills in computer-aided optical design, and aided in the formulation of a personal development plan to improve my performance across the Finmeccanica competencies.
To sum up, I would say that my role within FTG allows me to continually expand my scientific knowledge and solve challenging problems, particular passions of mine, whilst also utilising the knowledge and skills gained during my time as a PhD student and post-doctoral researcher.
