AgustaWestland
Tim Wolstencroft, Post-Graduate Engineer
After graduating from UMIST in 2006 with an MEng in Aerospace Engineering, I originally began work with a small engineering firm in Cornwall. However, there were no training and personal development provisions in place that would support me in working towards Chartered Engineer status and little opportunity for the “hands on” approach that I find inspiring.
Through my interest in helicopters, I had heard of AgustaWestland, so I decided to apply for the 2 year-post-graduate training scheme. When I attended the interview, I was very impressed with the company and the opportunities it presented. I decided to join AgustaWestland because its training programmes are better designed, and more closely meet my expectations in comparison to those offered by competitors in the industry.
On joining the company, I was immediately given challenging and satisfying tasks. Although sometimes demanding, guidance is readily available from other engineers within my department. I have also been presented with excellent opportunities for additional training, in areas such as CATIA solid modelling. Furthermore, I am involved in AgustaWestland’s “Leading Edge” Scheme, which is a selection of training courses tailored to professional development. I am also participating in the first international Finmeccanica Learning Induction Programme, where I will have the opportunity to travel internationally, learn Italian and meet other members of the project.
I have nearly completed my first placement in EH101 Structures and am now looking forward to the next stage of my training in Structural and Mechanical Test, where I will be undertaking some practical work. The company selects training opportunities that will suit the graduate's interests and offers some choice. The Training department endeavour to place you in areas of particular interest.
AgustaWestland will assist you in working towards Professional engineering status as part of their Post-Graduate scheme. I have been assigned a mentor for my professional development; we hold regular meetings, discuss my objectives for each placement and assess my progress. This is a very helpful process, particularly in supporting my objective of gaining Chartered status.
With the build facility so close to my office, I can easily go to see the aircraft under construction and later watch them from my window as they fly off. What more inspiration could I need?
