Description:
Located within the Daventry manufacturing site, the Daventry Technical Centre is responsible for the design, development and engineering of new and existing variants of V12, V16 & V18 diesel and gas engines up to 3500hp used in mining, industrial, loco, marine and power generation applications.
The student will be involved with measurement of strain and vibration both in the laboratory and on engines operating in the test cell. This work is carried out to ensure that new and modified components will not fail when subjected to the vibrations and loading arising from engine operation.
Placement duties will involve instrumentation set up, data collection & analysis and reporting with project work based around the LMS data acquisition and analysis system.
Training Provided:
Cummins standard training for new employees: Engine appreciation course. Presentation and communication skills. Practices and procedures.
A mentor will be there to guide you through:
- Strain Gauge application
- Vibration techniques (Modal, Power Spectral Density etc) using LMS
- Bolted Joint experimental validation
- Fatigue testing
There will be some scope for:
- Using the CAD package ProE
- Learning Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using the ANSYS package.
Skills and Experience Required:
- Preferred Discipline: Mechanical Engineering/Automotive Engineering
- PC literacy
- Teamwork/Communication/Working with cross functional groups
- Practical approach to support technical evaluation
- Ability to manage own projects
