Research in the Faculty

The Faculty of Engineering offers a lively research environment. There has been significant growth both in the range of activities we undertake and in our annual research income. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on commercially useful research and many of our activities are supported financially by industry, government and international funding bodies.

Our Research Centres and Groups are established to provide focus for our research activities and to encourage the cross-fertilisation of ideas across different sub-areas in the Faculty.

Our staff are also active on the boards and panels of many international bodies and are fellows of learned societies. They participate in international conferences and publish regularly. Some of the organisations they are involved with include The Royal Aeronautical Society, EPSRC, EU etc.

Research Centres:

Centre for Fire and Explosion Studies

The Centre for Fire and Explosion Studies (CFES) has a sustained record of excellence in research. We are committed to improving and promoting a global approach towards fire and explosion research. Recognising that the key to the successful delivery of research contracts is to have first class researchers, we aim to attract high quality research students and post-doctoral research fellows and offer them the vigorous training that will provide every single one of them with the head start to a successful and fulfilling career.

MATRC Materials Research Centre

This cross-Faculty research centre is highly interdisciplinary, and consists of three main research groups, each based around experienced researchers with an international profile. The work in each group is a balance of pure and applied research, strongly supported by EPSRC, EU FP6, industrial and overseas government funding. The research groups within the centre are:

  • Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
  • Molecular Electronics and Photonics
  • Constructional Materials and Sustainable Technology
