12 month Industrial Placement - Research and Development Engineering

The Business

Perkins Engines is a global leader in the field of small industrial diesel engines and medium sized diesel and gas engines for the power generation market, with manufacturing facilities in the UK, US, Brazil and China. The design, development and validation of a wide range of diesel engines is led from our Peterborough Engineering Centre for the small industrial engines and from Stafford Engineering Centre for the medium sized power generation diesel and gas engines. Perkins is a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar, which is the global leader in large construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines employing over 100,000 people worldwide.

We are a constantly evolving organisation that provides a huge range of opportunities. We develop and employ state of the art tools and techniques across all aspects of engine design, development and application. In addition, as part of Caterpillar we have access to a vast wealth of experience in machines and engines, combined with access to the resources of a global organisation. In order to grow and move forwards, we provide the necessary resources, freedom and support to those who thrive on this sort of challenge and opportunity.

Diesel and gas engine engineering has undergone a significant change of pace over the last 10 years; typical product lifecycles have shrunk from 20+ years down to 3 years. A fiercely competitive marketplace combined with evolving emissions standards and a demand for increased power density, are the significant factors. Perkins has responded through commitment to engineering excellence in research and new product development.

The Role

Each year Perkins recruits a number of highly motivated and capable industrial placement students to take on important roles within our Engineering teams. During their year out from study, successful candidates will typically have two 6-month placements within the following business areas:
  • Design and Mechanical Development
  • Performance and Emissions Development
  • Computer Aided Engineering (FEA / CFD / Systems)
  • Noise and Vibration
  • Engine Validation
  • Engine Test, Component Test and Machine Test (Global Engine Development Group)
  • Product Management
Our placement students are given the support and coaching required to develop their technical capability and business understanding. Within a short period of time our placement students become embedded team members, vital to the success of the engineering departments within which they operate, and accountable for delivering key engineering responsibilities.

The experience this offers, along with the social interaction between the other placement students and our annual graduate intake, means that our placement students are well positioned for their subsequent years back at university and a career in engineering. We also operate a conditional offers process. This means that post university, our highest performing placement students can be fast tracked to our IMechE approved Graduate Development scheme, without having to apply through the normal channels or attend assessment centre.
