2015 Leadership Development Programme

At the heart of Teach First is a unique two-year Leadership Development Programme. Challenging, stimulating and practical, it has been designed to develop your leadership skills, giving you the ability to adapt to new or changing situations and inspire enthusiasm and ambition in the classroom. Beginning with the Summer Institute in June, our Leadership Development Programme combines working, qualifying and training as a teacher with leadership development training, coaching and mentoring, and a range of networking and internship opportunities. Through completion of your PGCE, you will also gain credits which you can put towards a Masters qualification. Upon completion of the programme, you will then graduate to become a Teach First Ambassador.

Summer Institute:

The Summer Institute is a six week intensive residential training that takes place the summer before you start teaching in a classroom. This has been developed in partnership with the UK’s leading teacher training universities and is where you gain the core skills and strategies that you need to begin teaching.

First year of teaching:

In September you’ll join a school where you will continue to receive training and support from the Teach First network; this includes professional mentors in your school, tutors, fellow participants and Teach First staff. You are employed by the school and are paid a full-time salary for two years.

Gain PGCE:

Throughout the first year you will work towards a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE); a professional qualification which means, wherever your career takes you, you’ll always be able to return to teaching. The PGCE is awarded at the end of your first year of teaching.

Summer Project:

During the summer between your first and second year, you’ll have the opportunity to apply for a Summer Project, a ‘mini-internship’ where you will gain valuable work experience that will further develop your leadership skills and give you insights and experiences that will feed into your teaching practice. Previous organisations that have offered summer projects included: Google, PwC, Procter & Gamble, RM Education, Microsoft, DfE.

Second year of teaching:

During the second year you will continue to teach in your school as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT), building on your experience and using your leadership development training to continue to raise pupils aspirations and raise achievement.

Masters:

You will also have the opportunity to work towards a Masters at a vastly reduced cost, which is specifically designed to further develop your ability to be an effective leader in school. The Masters is a two-year optional commitment starting at the end of your first year on the Leadership Development Programme. The qualification will be valuable in any future career and enhance your status and mobility both in the UK and beyond.

On-going leadership development

Throughout the two years of teaching you will benefit from further development opportunities, coaching, business training and skills workshops. Our Leadership Development Programme is delivered through a combination of mandatory and elective elements all structured to fit around your busy teaching schedule and designed to allow you to map out a development journey that best ensures your short-term impact and suits your own long-term goals.
