Graduate Engineer - Network System Solutions (NCG)

Location: High Wycombe

Full time

Ref: R10007353

Altera Networking Systems Solutions Engineering works with Altera's largest customers to design solutions covering a wide range of computer network applications. These applications include: traditional network equipment such as switches, bridges, routers, and new network equipment implementing Network Function Virtualisation and/or Software Defined Networking.

Altera's Network System Solutions Engineering team, based in High Wycombe, is seeking a Junior Engineer with up to 2 years' postgraduate experience or a New College Graduate to join their verification team. As a member of this great team, you will have a unique opportunity to verify network system solutions on Altera programmable logic devices and Altera ARM-based SoC devices.

One of the key challenges in modern hardware development is ensuring that the designs are as bug-free as possible - a challenge often greater and requiring more skill than the design itself. To address this challenge, the area of hardware verification has grown over the last two decades. Today, this encompasses a broad range of technologies and techniques including logic simulation, use of formal (mathematical) techniques, hardware emulation, modelling, verification software, constrained randomisation, coverage and other metric collection, semi-formal verification plans, object-oriented simulation test-benches.  To be effective in this area, the modern verification engineer needs a range of technical skills including a good understanding of hardware design and architecture, software design skills, and the ability to grasp and apply a wide-range of domain-specific knowledge with a view to identifying areas where bugs might hide. In addition to this, they also need to be organised and tenacious, whilst having good interpersonal skills to work with the design team.

The verification team uses state-of-the-art methodologies, including industry-standard Universal Verification Methodology (UVM), verification planning, functional coverage and hardware testing. Our purpose is to find bugs and to improve the quality of the systems we provide to our customers, both internal and external.

This position has excellent opportunities for technical and professional growth. Our High Wycombe site provides a fun and supportive work environment. We fully support personal development and will provide training where required. We offer excellent benefits, free gym, an on-site Costa Coffee and flexible working.

The successful candidate must be energetic, dynamic and willing to learn certain domain-specific knowledge on the job. This entry-level position is ideal for a new or recent graduate who enjoys learning and applying advanced hardware/software development techniques, possibly having relevant hardware or software experience and is now looking to move into a verification role.

Qualifications required:

  • Expect to gain or have gained an excellent degree from a leading institution in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline
  • Solid foundation in hardware design and/or software programming and a real interest in verification
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • An understanding and experience of any of Hardware Design, SystemVerilog, UVM, Software Design, OOP, and hardware systems or software testing, would be beneficial

At Altera, we take pride in creating an energetic and dynamic work environment that is driven by ingenuity and innovation. We believe the growth and success of our company is directly linked to the growth and satisfaction of our employees.  That is why Altera is committed to a work environment that is flexible and collaborative, and allows our employees to reach their full potential.
