What made you want to join Shell?

I was interested in working for a multinational company, but there are so many out there it was a difficult decision. But with a great range of exciting career options and the ability to strongly influence your career path, Shell was my first pick.

What does your job involve?

As a consultant I work closely with different business groups to give support and advice on how to work better together, both virtually and face-to-face. I also get a chance to pilot a collaborative tools and services as part of a proof of concept before they are rolled out to the business. I’m currently working with an asset group on their virtual meeting improvement, which will involve a few trips to some offshore platforms. I also designed and led a project to improve the customer experience of collaborative tools for Exploration and Production Europe.

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve been involved in so far?

The most exciting role so far was working as the change and communications focal point for a global programme within Exploration and Production. Coordinating all the different regions virtually was extremely challenging and rewarding.

Please describe a time when your persistence has helped you overcome a challenge.

As part of improving the collaboration knowledge for Shell employees I suggested an Exploration and Production Europe-wide marketing campaign. For this campaign to be successful we decided to partner with information advisors to deliver the events. Ensuring all stakeholder expectations were appropriately managed required a clear scope and commitment to the change management processes I used for the project. As the scope changes were initiated, I had to ensure that this process was used without exception.

What kind of support have you had to achieve your career ambitions?

On joining Shell I was given an opportunity to attend an introduction course to Exploration and Production. With my specialised degrees in oil and gas I thought it was going to be a repetition of what I had already learned but I soon realised otherwise. I’ve also had bi-weekly meetings with my supervisor, a monthly meeting with my discipline advisor and I meet with my coach as and when required. The relationship I’ve built with them has constantly challenged me to be more proactive and innovative.

Which Shell project, past or present, would you like to have been involved in?

I’d like to be a part of the Shell Qatar GTL project. As it’s going to be the first commercial plant of its kind in the world, it would be a good experience to see how it all fits together. In addition, this cleaner fuel will reduce the carbon emissions of the customers that use it. I find it fascinating that the fuel does not require a change in appliance stock for end users, and as such could be easily adopted.
