Record your key competences

  • Most companies have a list of key personal attributes (or competences) they look for in candidates.
  • Use your My Gradcracker Dashboard to record answers to some of the more typical ones.
  • Show under each one examples of how you have displayed these competences.
  • Use the STAR model, covering the Situation or Task, Actions and Results, and try to use examples from a range of experiences in work, university and other activities.

Typical key competency questions

  • Problem solving
Can you tell me about a problem you have faced, either within a team or as an individual, and how you solved the problem?
  • Leadership
Can you tell me about a time when you had to lead a team of people in order to achieve an objective?
  • Teamwork
Can you describe a time when you were a member of a team and tell me how you positively contributed to the team?
  • Decision making
What is the most difficult decision you have had to make?
  • Responsibility
Can you give me an example of a position of responsibility you have held?
  • Communication skills
Tell me about a time when you had to teach or instruct someone else. Was it successful?
Don’t just look at the general competences you’d expect for a type of role, look at an employer’s values and principles. A lot of the time they will combine the two, and if you’ve researched what is important to that employer, you stand a much better chance of gaining a position with them.
