Our Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship programmes are aimed at people who have a passion for learning and a passion for pioneering. Ambitious, innovative and determined people, who respect our heritage and think beyond the challenges of today to build the cars of tomorrow. With a blend of hands-on experience and qualifications to target, you will work on projects that are fundamental to our global success. 

Software engineering pathway 

Software gives us our edge. It makes our thinking come alive in the real world. This programme will teach you how to design, build and test ground-breaking software. You’ll also learn how to integrate engineering principles that deliver superior analysis, development and built-in security. 

As a DTS Apprentice on the software engineering pathway, you could work within Core Engineering or IT.  

Core Engineering 

Core Engineering is comprised of Electrical Engineering, Product Engineering Operations, Powertrain and Body / Chassis. Precision and pride are built into every vehicle inspiring lifetime loyalty in our customers. Every conceivable aspect of the manufacturing process is overseen, refined and continuously improved and reinvented within Core Engineering. 

  • Electrical Engineering – delivers smart, connected, clean vehicles through creativity and design innovation and offers opportunities in a variety of digital disciplines. The scope of Electrical Engineering is wide and covers complex systems design as well as electronic hardware and software creation. You could be involved in a wide variety of products across the completed software development lifecycle. This could be product definition and requirements management or implementation as part of a global team creating source code as part of an agile development team. Alternatively, you may be involved in creating the environment to support Software Engineers through tooling and creating cloud-based solutions that enable automation. 
  • Product Engineering Operations – underpins technical innovation and product delivery with engineering delivery, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world-class products. A diverse team, we utilise a variety of skill sets, from information management and data analytics to building and testing prototypes. You will design, build and test the innovative software that we use in our vehicles, and you will learn how to integrate your knowledge with engineering requirements and decisions. 
  • Powertrain – leads in the design, test, validation and certification of world-class propulsion systems aimed at delivering driving experiences our customers love for life. Apprentices will support the business as we move to electrification. Whichever role you are appointed to, you will be part of a team of world-leading software engineers who are working on cutting edge products. You will be supported to work across teams and gain experience problem solving and generating new supporting documents. In doing so, you will develop an in-depth knowledge of the products that you and your teamwork on.
  • Body / Chassis – is one of the largest engineering departments within the business with growth plans for expansion in the UK, India and China. Body Chassis Engineering are responsible for the delivery of practically everything the customer sees and touches on a vehicle. Apprentices will join one of the teams responsible for delivering one of our key chassis systems such as air suspension, damping, driver modes or driveline. You will learn about modelling control systems using Matlab / Simulink and be responsible for delivering these through the delivery life cycle - model development, auto coding, model in the loop testing (MIL), software in the loop testing (SIL), hardware in the loop (HIL) and vehicle test activities. You will gain experience working in a software process designed to meet Aspice level 3 and compliant with other industry-standard software engineering guidelines. 


  • IT – as a member of the Site Reliability Engineering Function, you will help the team with tasks such as the deployment, monitoring, and support of our cloud infrastructure estate. You will work with modern technologies in a public cloud environment. You will learn and practice scripting and programming skills in the deployment and support of key infrastructure and configurations. The role will provide a unique opportunity for you to learn and practice modern development methodologies and processes and personal development and accreditation. 

The Apprenticeship 

The Digital Technology Solutions (degree apprenticeship – Level 6) is a four-year degree apprenticeship programme, where you earn whilst you learn. 

For the first two years, you will study a range of core subjects with pathway specialisms in years three and four. Modules are taught in weeklong blocks throughout the academic year by Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), part of the University of Warwick. These will be a mix of lectures, practical laboratories, seminars and tutorials and you will also have access to a virtual learning environment for further support between blocks. 

The final year of your apprenticeship will see you complete your end-point assessment and achieve your Level 6 Apprenticeship, ready for an amazing career in engineering or IT. 

You’ll contribute to the business in your assigned role, as well as undertake additional study in your own time, to achieve your academic award. A network of apprentice tutors and line managers will regularly review your progress and offer advice along the way, to support you in performing at your best. 

There are four pathways within the Level 6 Digital and Technology Solutions Degree Apprenticeship available for roles in 2022: 

  • Cyber Security, in our Information and Cyber Security team 
  • Data Analytics, in Engineering, InDigital or IT teams 
  • Software Engineering, in our Engineering and IT teams  
  • Software Engineering with Data, in our Engineering and IT teams  

In years 1 and 2 you will cover modules in all four of the pathways and then in years 3 and 4 you will move onto the specific modules for the software engineering pathway. 

Typical programme: 

  • Modules (Year 1) Smart Solutions Development- I (Programming), Applied Maths-I, Planning Personal & Professional Development, Network Protocols & Infrastructure, Information Business Management Operations and Smart Solutions Development -II (Databases). 
  • Modules (Year 2) Applied Maths-II, Information Systems for Business Processes, Agile Project Management, Cyber Risks in Organisations, Internet of things, Software Development Life Cycle and Negotiated Learning.
  • Modules (Years 3 & 4) Real time operating systems, Industrial Vision and Processing, Automotive Control Systems, User Experience and Applications Development, Automotive Communication Networks and Work Based Project. 

Following the successful completion of your Apprenticeship, you could find yourself working in our Engineering or IT teams. 

What’s required 

Our academic entry requirements are: 

GCSE Maths and English Language at level 5 (C) or higher and in addition a further 3 GCSEs at level 5 (C) or higher. 

A level Maths grade C or higher and an additional A level in Physics; Chemistry; Design & Technology; ICT; Computer Science; Economics or Engineering at grade C or higher. 

In addition to the academic requirements at the assessment stage, we will also look for evidence of other qualifications, knowledge, experience or qualities – for example, a third A level or other further academic qualifications; a substantial time in employment or voluntary activity; a technical project or hobby or substantial responsibilities as a carer. You will also need to demonstrate a passion for technology and strong motivation for the role.
