Modern Jaguar Land Rover vehicles are amongst the most advanced technology people use on a daily basis. Before the customer enters the car, it is identifying the key fob and their phone to recognise them and allow access. On their journey, software aids their driving with stability and assistance systems, and provides a welcoming and refined user experience through in-vehicle infotainment.
Our Software engineering teams are responsible for designing and developing the software which is running both inside and outside of the vehicle, supporting all of the features a customer expects from a Jaguar Land Rover product. Software is key to driving the technology advances whether they be in ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), Infotainment or new Electric Propulsion. Software Engineers are fundamental to the future of Jaguar Land Rover in creating world class products that drive our customer’s needs.
The Software teams use iterative and concurrent engineering approaches to provide robust software innovation and integration as well as a multitude of techniques including model-based software development and code writing. You could be involved in the creation of these models or the code or be providing support and guidance to our suppliers to ensure robust products and experiences are delivered.
You will be involved in live projects from day one, which could include automation and infrastructure. You could be part of the team implementing a cloud-based infrastructure - providing the tools and environment for large software teams to collaborate and work within. This environment could be created using Elastic cloud architectures, infrastructure as code and a variety of scripting languages.
Alternatively you could be working in low-level software development ensuring the in-vehicle computer systems have the best balance of performance. Low-Level boot charts, balancing processor core loading and refining fast boot processes are areas you will focus on to produce the best in-vehicle performance.
During your placement you will get to work in one of our Software teams and develop both experience and insight into our approach.
Core Engineering builds the precision and pride into every vehicle that inspires loyalty in our customers. Every conceivable aspect of the manufacturing process is overseen, refined and continuously improved and reinvented here. Core Engineering undergraduate placements could be in: Body and Chassis Engineering; Electrical Engineering, Powertrain, Product Engineering Operations and Research.
Body & Chassis
Body & Chassis Engineering is where the vehicle design and character become the actual product. It’s the Engineering's role to provide our customers great cars to look at, live with and live in, and that are also safe and sustainable. This requires engineering excellence, precision, and attention to detail. The department is mainly organised in Programme Delivery, Commodity and Attributes.
Body Engineering is everything that you touch and see in the car. The Body commodities are Lids, Doors, Structures, Cabin and Safety, Cockpit, Climate, Seats, Exteriors, Lighting and Glazing & Roofs. The Body attributes areas are Perceived Quality, Materials & Sustainability, and Vehicle Safety.
Chassis Engineering is everything that moves you in the car to provide a wonderful driving experience on road/off road and to deliver wonderful dynamics and motion control systems for every situation. The Chassis commodities are Axle Group, Steering Function, Brakes Engineering and Suspension Function. The Chassis attributes area looks after Driving Dynamics and off-road capability.
Electrical Engineering delivers smart, connected, clean vehicles through creativity and design innovation and offers opportunities in a variety of digital disciplines. The scope for Electrical Engineering is wide and covers complex systems design as well as electronic hardware and software creation. The features you may expect such as cabin interior functions or infotainment but also technologies such as connectivity, off-board processing and mobile app design to provide a wider range of customer experience.
Jaguar Land Rover Powertrain Engineering are leaders in the design, test, validation and certification of world class propulsion systems. The scope of the propulsion systems is far reaching and includes major commodity groups such as engines, transmissions, drivelines, electric drive units, energy storage devices and are complemented by software system integration, calibration and control strategies.
Powertrain use state of the art build, test and sign off facilities to provide the power and driving force behind our vehicles – using the combined expertise of our cross functional teams to find the ideal balance between performance, sustainability and refinement, while responding to the rapidly changing environmental issues that shape our industry.
Product Engineering Operations (PE Ops)
Product Engineering Operations are fundamentally involved at every stage of the engineering process, and are driving an exciting transformation in the way we engineer and deliver our products with class leading technology and quality. PE Ops underpin technical innovation and product delivery with engineering delivery, tools and processes and specialist technical services to deliver our world class products. This is a diverse team, that harness a variety of skill sets, from information management and data analytics, to building and testing prototypes.
Research covers all the different engineering elements that make up the car in the early stages of discovery, feasibility and invention. The team focuses on problem solving difficult scientific and engineering problems, doing technical feasibility, building prototypes (both physical and software), and creating proof of concepts. This team drives about 1/3 of new innovation patents for JLR and is the driving spirit of innovation.
Regardless of which team you join, you’ll be at the heart of Jaguar Land Rover’s Software strategy, bringing to life concepts and turning them into reality, for our customers.
Excellence runs throughout our entire business, and we expect you to be the same. So, as well as working towards a degree in software engineering; computer science, cyber engineering or other software focused degree at 2:2 level or higher, you’ll need drive, creativity, a keen eye for detail, and a never-ending commitment to delivering results.
Please be aware that our undergraduate placement opportunities are only open to penultimate year students (i.e., students who will be returning to their final year of study following their placement with us).
All our undergraduate programmes have a fixed start date commencing June 20th 2022 and will run for a duration of 12 months.
