The Position

You will be inducted on to the company graduate training scheme and go through a period of training at various sites throughout the UK.

An opportunity has arisen for a Graduate Chemist to work at the Damhead power station. The Graduate Thermal Chemist will assist the Group Asset Integrity Chemist to ensure that VPI has the scientific and technical capability to provide quality chemistry support to the fleet of Combined Cycle Gas Turbines (CCGT) Power Stations and associated activities.

The activities will include the management of the CCGT water and steam cycle assets, to include: water treatment processes, feedwater/boiler water chemistries, cooling water chemistry and input on final effluent discharge quality.

As part of your training, you will be inducted on to the company graduate training scheme and go through a period of training at various sites throughout the UK.


The Chemist will provide the following duties, but the post holder will be expected to undertake a wide range of tasks within their level of competence.

  • Support to the fleet of CCGT power stations and associated activities within the VPI portfolio.
  • Provide chemical advice to the operations teams to ensure the safe, reliable and economic operation of the assets.
  • Take a hands on approach in trouble shooting process problems within water treatment, cycle chemistry and cooling water chemistry.
  • Provide advice on all aspects of plant preservation on all relevant plant in order to mitigate corrosion mechanisms.
  • Assist in plant inspections to determine the efficacy of the water steam cycle chemical dosing philosophy/program.
  • Maintain and control the management of legionella in accordance to the ACoP.
  • Develop and maintain external relationships with technical service providers and liaise with OEM support staff.
  • Maintain communication with the site operational teams.
  • Act as an advisor on safety matters including chemical safety, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH), confined space entry and incident response.

  • Self-motivated and able to work with limited supervision
  • Able to lead groups of individuals in task work and communicate to all levels within the organisation
  • Ability to assist and support colleagues and promote co-operation
  • Desire, aptitude, and attitude to learn and develop and share your knowledge and experience with colleagues
  • Ability to work as part of a small team, encouraging collaborative working relationships
  • Valid Driving Licence and prepared to undertake occasional travel to multiple sites


  • Having a technical capability to optimise plant performance and contribution.
  • Able to handle complex information and make informed decisions under pressure that impact H&S, plant availability.
  • Logical approach to problem solving.
  • Potential to work outside office hours during commissioning or fault diagnostics.
  • Provide technical support for the delivery of Major Overhauls.
  • Participate in work activities at different locations and travel within the region where the business need arises.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • 2.1 Degree in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry or HNC
  • Enthusiastic and committed with excellent planning and organisational skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
  • Strong people skills with the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses.
  • Willing to learn about the operation and maintenance of large generating plant and the associated system, particularly the water treatment plants and the cooling systems.
  • Able to build effective working relationships at all levels in the CCGT.
  • Computer literate.
  • Valid Driving License.

Planning and organising

  • Organises own workload and those of contractors.
  • Support the Station production teams over the short and medium term via input to operational plans, and delivery of long-term objectives.
  • Develop and manage plans for outage and upgrades.

Internal and external relationships


  • Regular meeting with the Group Asset Integrity Chemist and Asset Integrity team.
  • Interact with other Engineering disciplines where specific project are being implemented.
  • Support Station Management, Station Production Staff and Station Maintenance staff across a portfolio of five regionally and technically diverse sites.
  • Interaction with procurement for framework agreements contracts.


  • Chemical and Equipment suppliers
  • Consultants in the fields of water treatment and water steam cycle chemistry
  • Attend institution conferences and meetings relating to power generation chemistry and asset integrity.
