Are you a Mechanical engineering undergraduate looking to complete a year in industry? Then why not consider VPI, we have a great opportunity for someone to spend time as a valuable member of our Mechanical Engineering Team based at Damhead Creek Power Station, Rochester, Kent.
A year in industry with VPI is a great opportunity to put the theory you are learning into practise. We are one of the largest energy producers in the UK with five operational Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) sites totalling a fleet capacity of 3119 megawatts.
This is a placement where you will have the opportunity to make a tangible difference. Not only will you learn valuable skills as you start out on your career, but you will also be doing so in one of our CCGT sites that provide invaluable power and stability to the National Grid.
On your placement, you will get hands on with a range of projects and variety of challenges that arise on plant. You will be working collaboratively with your team to find the best solutions, utilising your problem- solving skills, and leveraging your knowledge gained at university.
More specifically you will have the opportunity to work on mechanical systems ranging from gas and steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG’s), and the associated auxiliary system items including compressors, pumps, and pneumatic & hydraulic valves.
Project specific works throughout your placement year will include working with the site team on the annual maintenance of their Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines & Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG’s).
If you are studying towards a MEng, BEng or BSc in Mechanical Engineering, then we would love to hear from you. As Mechanical focused applicants you will need an understanding of thermal cycles, valves, pumps, and heat exchangers. A basic understanding of gas turbine fundamentals would also be advantageous but not essential.
A positive attitude with good communication skills, and the ability to work as part of a dynamic multi-disciplined engineering team will compliment your learning experience throughout the placement term.
Don’t just take it from us, hear what Nisirine Nzihi, 2nd year Aeronautical Engineering undergraduate student at the University of Brighton has to say about her experience of completing a year in industry placement with VPI:
“Carrying out my Year in Industry in a friendly and professional work environment as that of Shoreham Power Station gave me the opportunity to carry out real-life projects alongside experienced engineers while being involved in different departments within the business.
I have had the chance to carry out engineering tasks while being part of a team, acquire new software skills, carry out practical activities in the workshops under the guidance and supervision of a professional, apply my university knowledge - including the use of CAD software - and, during maintenance outage periods, I was able to observe the overhaul of various systems and components while speaking to technical experts.
Throughout the year, everyone in the company has been friendly, open, and willing to help me learn and develop. I have always had the support of both my manager and my trainer. All this helped me improve both my personal development and my technical skills, gain invaluable experience, and get a feel of professional work in industry.”
Salary will be £20,000 per annum, with 25-days' annual leave, additional to bank holidays.
