Jac Perry

Graduate Associate

Hi, I’m Jac, I grew up in west Wales in a village called Upper Tumble. I moved to Cardiff to study Biomedical Sciences at Cardiff Metropolitan University. From about 7 years old, I competed in a sport called tumbling. I was a member of the British squad and competed number of times internationally. I finally finished after my first year of university to concentrate on my studies. I still have an interest in gymnastics but now only as a spectator. I’m now a keen hiker and you can find me most weekends on a mountain somewhere – I do enjoy a beer or two as well!

I work in the Venture Graduate programme which is a part of the larger Venture portfolio. This programme is designed to retain and attract graduates to the CCR. We do this by working closely with universities, regional businesses, and graduates, helping to find those graduates excellent jobs in the region. This role is perfect for me as I thrive from meeting new people and helping others getting a good start in their careers. During my time with CCR I hope to gain a thorough understanding of the relationship between the public and private sector and what we as the public sector can do to attract and nurture new business to Southeast Wales – creating more well-paid jobs and increasing the quality of life for all those that live in the region.

Did you apply for many graduate roles or schemes? (if so, how many)

“I applied for bout 2 or 3 after I left Uni, I worked in-between when I finished and getting to work with CCR.”

What were your thoughts/feelings around applying for roles/schemes during a pandemic?

“I was happy to do so. The pandemic has caused so much disruption to everyone’s lives, and I didn’t want it to disrupt mine anymore, so I was more than happy to apply.”

What attracted you to the Venture Graduate Scheme?

“The opportunities and experience I would gain from working in a position such as this would be invaluable. Also, after researching the CCR and seeing the projects that it has invested in -whether it be regional skills or specific industry cluster development – I knew it would be a great and interesting place to work.”

How was your experience applying for the Venture Graduate Scheme during the pandemic?

“I enjoyed it in all honestly. I’ve applied to several jobs before, and I’ve had a couple of interviews – both good and bad – but this application and interview process was the best. After the initial online application, I had a video interview with Gerry, one of the Graduate Development Officers with CCR. I was so nervous for the interview, but as soon as we started talking, I completely relaxed, and it was as if we had known each other for years. When we met for the face-to-face interview, it was exactly the same, completely relaxed. I knew this was somewhere that I really wanted to work and where I would fit in.”

What are you hoping to achieve during your time on the scheme?

“I want to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between the public and private sector, and what we as the public can do to nurture new and existing business in the region.”

Is there anything you would say to others thinking of applying for the scheme?

“Do it! What have you got to lose?”

One sentence to sum up your Venture Graduate Scheme experience…

“My experience so far has been great, I’ve learned so much in the time that I’ve been here, and I’ve met some fantastic people.”

One word that sums up your Venture Graduate Scheme experience…

“Educational.”

How are you finding your new role? And, has it exceeded expectations?

“My role is going well, I really feel like I’m making a difference. It definitely has exceeded expectations.”

How are you finding the modules?

“They are interesting, I find that the course is making me very reflective and analytical on my leadership style – which I think is essential to being a good leader/manager. “
