The Mary Lyon Centre at MRC Harwell (MLC) is located in an expanding science and innovation park in Oxfordshire and is an internationally renowned centre at the forefront of genetics research. As the hub of the new National Mouse Genetics Network, the specialist facilities and capabilities of the MLC support a number of research groups across the UK to accelerate our understanding of human disease.

About the Role

Would you like to play a key role in implementing environmental sustainability?

If you are interested in developing skills and projects within environmental sustainability, and keen to drive change within a cutting edge research facility, then this could be the role for you.

This role will give the successful candidate the responsibility for helping to drive all aspects of the sustainability of the site forward and will be given substantial training and development opportunities to ensure that they are equipped to make a difference on what is a complex site.

This role will suit a recent or prospective graduate who is available to start in Summer 2025. No prior work experience in this sector is necessary, however you should have a passion for developing your skills and knowledge, and the drive to make a difference to the environmental sustainability of the research at the Mary Lyon Centre.

You will be expected to work onsite to be a visible presence, championing environmental sustainability, and making a valuable and positive contribution, with a range of stakeholders.

Main duties and key responsibilities:

  • Leading and administering the work of the site’s green groups activities and direction.
  • Using LEAF as a guide, working with researchers to lessen the environmental impact from the laboratories, animal husbandry, and other facilities.
  • Making improvements to the biodiversity on the site by enabling and managing small projects and working on an ongoing basis with site staff and contractors.
  • Communicating the achievements in environmental sustainability improvement across the site and to other stakeholders.
  • Improving the use of resources onsite by working with the supply chain, operations, and making improvements to waste segregation and reduction.
  • Being a visible presence onsite, to attend meetings, audit environmental impact, and arrange sustainability activities.
  • Interpreting and smoothly introducing mandatory environmental standards, monitoring, and reporting to the site and services.
  • Disseminating best practice to the whole of MRC Harwell’s staff and supporting the introduction of best practices.

About You

You will need to hold/have:

  • Degree level qualification in environmental sustainability or a related field, with a proven interest in sustainability issues and/or comparable experience in an environmental sustainability role.
  • Excellent analytical and reporting skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent level of IT literacy and good working knowledge of Microsoft packages.
