Materials Engineering is integral to the manufacture, refit and subsequent assurance of the Royal Navy’s fleet of submarines and warships. Over the course of two years you will experience first-hand the breadth of activities required to support these vessels – working on complex, high-integrity engineering systems – as well as getting the chance to investigate new technologies to make these activities more efficient and effective.
Places on our Metallurgy/Materials Engineering programme for Autumn 2020 are available in our Marine sector. But no matter which team you join, you could be based anywhere in the UK. That’s why we ask all our graduates to be flexible and willing to move during their programme.
Working in a discipline with such fundamental importance to platform integrity means that you will experience all parts of a vessel’s lifecycle. This will involve: assessment of design; development of weld procedures; non-destructive and destructive testing; engineering critical assessment; and failure mode investigations.
As part of this scheme you will be working with and managing projects involving: 3D laser/optical scanning for corrosion mapping; automatic welding processes involving mechanised and robotic systems; electron microscopy and x-ray analysis of microstructures and fractures; computer tomography with digital radiography; and remotely operated inspection capability for nuclear systems. This will also involve working with catapult companies and university research enterprises for the development of initiatives that will drive efficiency and effectiveness into the business.
You will be deeply embedded in a variety of hands-on technical assurance activities, trusted to support vessels, facilities and the team managing their upkeep and improvement. This unique perspective, and engagement with on-site manufacturing, procurement, quality, safety and management will form the robust basis of your long-term career, whichever direction it takes you. Alongside this you will enjoy a competitive salary of £28k - £30k with our full support to ensure you attain professional registration.
You will need a 2:2 BSc/BEng (Hons) degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgy or other relevant Engineering disciplines. You will also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment).
