My path into Software Engineering is somewhat non-traditional… After finishing my A-Levels, I went to Newcastle University to study Mathematics & Statistics and following that, the University of Leeds to study a Masters in Exploration Geophysics.
During my masters, I still didn’t know what career path I wanted to follow, but I stumbled across BAE Systems Applied Intelligence’s National Security Academy – a 3 month intensive training course to become a Software Engineer. Since then I’ve never looked back and have now been working as a Software Engineer in the Defence industry for over 5 years.
I joined SiXworks in early 2020 and since have had some amazing opportunities– the highlight being presenting a live airborne demonstration in an RAF plane at 25,000ft! As a female engineer it can be daunting working in a currently male dominated industry, however SiXworks’ approach to diversity and inclusion is second to none - I have experienced nothing but support and encouragement from everyone at the company in every aspect of my career development.
As the Technical Lead on one project and Senior Software Engineer on another, my days vary quite significantly. I could be doing anything from project planning, presenting to customers, writing code, solving technical problems or researching new ideas and solutions.
Not only that, we get to work with a wide range of languages and technologies: from JavaScript, C# and Java to NiFi, Elasticsearch and Kafka – the list goes on!. I love the variation my role offers – I’m constantly being challenged and every day is different. However, the best thing about working for SiXworks is the sense of reward knowing that what you are helping to develop is going to make a real difference to the safety of the UK!
