Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship

Software Engineering Degree

Early Careers at Rolls-Royce
What's working at Rolls-Royce like? Watch to find out!

Can you see yourself creating the ‘brains’ behind cutting-edge aircrafts? Become a Software Engineering Degree Apprentice and that’s exactly what you could be doing. As we develop new solutions to help our company and customers move towards a lower carbon future, the software that controls our power systems will be even more vital.

We’ve been a force for progress for over 100 years. And it’s what’s fuelling our next chapter as we power, protect, and connect people everywhere. That’s our vision for you, too.

Join us and we’ll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive culture that invests in you and gives you access to opportunities where you can grow your career and make a difference.

The programme

Over four years, you’ll learn from the expert teams in our Civil Aerospace business working on embedded, real-time safety critical software and firmware development. As well receiving on-the-job training, you’ll also study for a Software Engineering Degree at the University of Derby.

Together, this will give you a solid foundation for an exciting future, which could see you becoming a development specialist or leading large-scale projects in systems and software.

What you’ll do

Through a series of long-term placements, project-based work and shorter training courses, you’ll learn essential skills in each stage of the software development lifecycle – everything from design implementation to verification, digital data and cyber security.

Day to day, you’ll be developing solutions for safety critical applications in small teams, enhancing and maintaining the software that provides the ‘brains’ behind powerful jet engines.

What you’ll need

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4/C which must include Maths and English Language.
  • 104 UCAS points (obtained or predicted) from either:
    • 3 A-levels at grade BCC or above including Maths, ideally a Business/IT-related subject and one other. Excluding General Studies.
    • A Level 3 Extended BTEC Diploma in a relevant subject at DDM
    • A T-Level at Merit in a STEM subject

Every bit as important as your academic achievements, however, are the personal qualities you bring to the role. You need to be an analytical thinker, creative problem solver, as well as someone who’s ready to learn and works well as part of a team.

Beyond that, we’re looking for someone with a deep interest in technology and robotics. Perhaps, you’re already starting to master programming using Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Or even exploring how to interface with hardware through small robotics projects.

Our behaviours drive us - we put safety first, do the right thing, keep it simple and make a difference. We’ll expect that of you, too.

What you’ll get

  • A competitive starting salary with annual pay rises
  • A fully funded Software Engineering Degree with the University of Derby.
  • 33 days’ holiday per year (including bank holidays)
  • Competitive pension
  • A choice of voluntary benefits including discounts at nationwide stores, gyms, discounted health care, free digital GP, Cycle to Work scheme and more all available on our TotalReward portal
  • Continuous learning and development
  • Support from managers, leaders, mentors and other apprentices
  • Opportunities to develop beyond your day-to-day role and get involved in social activities
  • An independent, 24-hour, confidential counselling service
