Graduate Aeronautical Engineer

We are currently seeking to recruit a Graduate Aeronautical Engineer to join our busy Engineering team at QinetiQ Target Systems (QTS). QTS is a wholly owned subsidiary of QinetiQ Group PLC specialising in the design and manufacture of a range of state of the art Unmanned Aerial and Surface Target systems including the world leading Banshee target.

QTS targets are used to enable realistic weapons test and evaluation and operator training in over 40 countries worldwide with QTS providing a complete managed service in over 15 of these countries.

The role includes aspects of aeronautical engineering from simulation and modelling to practical testing of air vehicle systems.

Duties include: 

  • Aeronautical engineering work on QTS Design and sustainment Engineering projects working alongside more experienced members of the team to learn/improve practical skills in Aerodynamics analysis and design, control law simulations and development, CFD operation and results analysis
  • Assist in the creation of Engineering documentation and reports
  • Assist in building and testing prototype aircraft and payloads
  • Gain an understanding of how the QTS targets operate and the underlying systems
  • Analyse aircraft telemetry and report findings
  • Provide support to Field Services and Trials activities
  • Occasional foreign travel
  • Working within an ISO 9001 design environment
  • Following the QTS Engineering Design Procedure (GP005)
  • Ensure that company processes are correctly followed within the Aero team

The successful candidate will: 

  • have a degree or equivalent, in relevant fields such as Aeronautics/Aerodynamics/Physics
  • have basic knowledge of the principles of flight
  • have experience in using CFD development tools, process and interpretation of result
  • have a genuine interest to learn a wide range of skills
  • be able to work individually or in the wider team as required
  • have good communication skills
  • have a good understanding of Microsoft Office tools including Word and Excel
  • have a structured and documented work methods  
  • The ability to use a CAD design tool (Soldiworks preferred) and experience of using MATLAB and Simulink would be an advantage
