As part of the team within Naval Ships you will have the opportunity to work on some of the largest engineering projects in the UK. We have teams working on the Royal Navy’s two new Aircraft Carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth, HMS Prince of Wales, which will be the backbone of the UK fleet for decades to come. We also recently delivered the advanced Type 45 Destroyers and our work is already underway on the Type 26 Global Combat Ship.
You could play a vital role in the design and development of the many mechanical aspects of these modern warships thus ensuring our customers are provided with the capabilities they need to operate effectively and safely, whether protecting the world’s shipping lanes or providing humanitarian relief.
As a Mechanical Engineer you’ll be the one who turns ideas into products. You’ll be involved in the design, development and testing of the complex mechanical systems. In the early stages of a project, you’ll apply scientific principles and technical information to generate concept ideas. After this you will select the most suitable design and turn it into a viable solution.
Through 3D modelling and a range of analysis tools, you’ll create a detailed design of the product that factors into considerations such as materials, manufacture, assembly, cost and performance to name just a few. Our military and commercial programmes require us to push our capabilities and technologies to the limit of what is achievable today. This raises many challenges for the system as it must ultimately meet our customers’ stringent safety requirements and bring leading edge performance to give competitive advantage wherever applied.
To apply, you’ll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree. Accepted degrees: Mechanical Engineering and Marine Engineering.
