We currently have several exciting opportunities for graduate Chemists to join our Catalyst Technologies R&D team utilising our state-of-the-art research facilities on Teesside. These positions will be supporting markets as diverse as gas purification, chemical catalysts, biomass utilisation, low carbon solutions and Low Carbon Hydrogen and focus on developing and testing new catalysts and absorbents.

The successful candidates will be expected to manage and drive their own lab-based project work to deliver business critical scientific research aimed at developing the next generation of catalysts, absorbents and chemical processes.

The roles will involve significant interaction with the commercial, engineering and manufacturing functions of the business. As well as being technically challenging, these roles will provide candidates excellent opportunities to develop their technical skills and future careers as part of a successful and expanding business with a real focus on sustainability.

Efficient Natural Resources is one of our Sectors, within Johnson Matthey plc with revenues of circa £1 billion (circa £7 billion including precious metal value acquired and traded) and operations worldwide. With the rise of both population figures and consumer expectations, thoughts are turning to how we can make more of the resources we have available. Our Efficient Natural Resources sector helps customers to achieve greater efficiency and optimal yields in the use of these natural resources. Through recycling capabilities, we help the world use resources efficiently and protect the environment.

The Catalyst Technologies business serves the oil, gas, commodity chemicals, petrochemicals, and fine chemicals industries. We pride ourselves on our technical expertise and the relationships we foster with our customers are built from the appreciation of the knowledge base we can bring to support their business.

Your responsibilities:

  • Primarily lab based carrying out experimental work to support current markets and exciting new product and market developments
  • Contributing innovative ideas for the development of new products and technologies to strengthen our position in our fast-moving markets.
  • Creating, handling and interpretating experimental data to draw conclusions, develop ideas and propose hypotheses.
  • Providing technical support to the engineering team, our global manufacturing sites, and to our customers around the world.
  • Contributing to the successful delivery of new product development projects via preparation of samples, collation of testing and characterisation results and the generation of insights.
  • Operating as responsible person for test equipment and laboratories.
  • Actively looking to build proficiency in a broad range of R&D techniques that can be applied across programs and accessing scientific literature to increase understanding and support project work

Requirements for the role:

  • Degree and/or postgraduate qualification in chemistry or a related discipline with at least a 2.1 in their first degree.
  • Prior experience of working in the chemical industry and any experience in catalyst development and testing would be advantageous, but not essential.
  • Innovation will be key to the future success of the business and an ability to deliver innovative new ideas and follow them through to completion will also be a significant advantage
  • Ability to work across many functions and with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to build collaborative relationships
  • Due to the hazardous nature of the chemicals involved, consideration and knowledge of safety in the laboratory environment is also critical.
