We are seeking highly motivated Chemistry students to join our R&D team based in our Technology Centre in Billingham.

As one of 3 placement students, you will join our research teams and be involved in one of our coveted research projects. These include heterogeneous catalysis, manufacturing science and zeolite synthesis. You will have the opportunity to be involved in the processes of catalyst development, from synthesis to characterisation to testing.

In these placements you will gain experience working in a world class R&D facility whilst receiving support for your own personal and professional development. Full training will be given to assist you in successfully undertaking your responsibilities. The team of scientists at our technology centre in Billingham are always open to teach you a new skill or offer their help and expertise.

In R&D no two days are alike, therefore a “typical day” will vary depending on the project. In general, it will involve the planning/designing of your experiments, performing the experiment, and analysing the results. You will be able to learn new characterization techniques and/or use pieces of equipment you might be un-familiar with, broadening your knowledge of the chemical sciences.

There will be meetings centred around EHS and project work alongside world class training sessions. You will read scientific papers, write reports, and create presentations about your work and improve not only your experimental and technical knowledge but also your scientific presentation skills.

Our Technology Centre business provides research and technical support for the commercial operations of JM’s business units. In addition, they offer a comprehensive array of advanced characterisation services; provide a company-wide information resource; and conduct fundamental research into new processes and technologies essential to the future growth and success of our company.

The placements will commence in Summer 2023 for a period of 12 months

Your responsibilities:

  • Carry out experiments and interpret results of work which you have been assigned
  • Prepare reports/summaries on experimental work undertaken, taking into account the project objectives
  • Communicate results to the project team and other stakeholders
  • Maintain excellent EHS standards at all times
  • Contribute ideas and suggestions for improvements to the project

Requirements for the role:

  • Currently studying a degree in Chemistry
  • Ability to effectively manage your own time
  • Strong attention to detail during experimental work
  • Positive and Passionate, a strong team player

How you will be rewarded:

We offer a competitive compensation and JM Elements benefits package including bonus, excellent pension contributions and 25 days' annual leave (varies for shift based roles). Our JM Elements Benefits programme helps our employees understand and manage the JM benefits, as well as helping you focus on your overall wellbeing – for you and your family.
We use our inspiring science and technology to enhance lives. For those who are passionate about sustainable solutions and shaping our markets, we offer stretch and a wealth of diverse opportunities.
