The role

Thales, in partnership with Welsh Government and the University of South Wales, are developing a National Digital Exploitation Centre (NDEC). In recognition of forthcoming major infrastructure and Critical National Infrastructure programmes in Wales and a need to create and retain high value jobs in the region as well as stimulate sustainable growth in regional business; NDEC will be a custom-built facility in South Wales to meet this need.

To help support our development, we are seeking an Cyber Range Technician to work as part of a multi skilled team and be responsible for the operation of the Cyber Lab facilities within NDEC ensuring the environment and supporting cyber tools are specified, maintained and meet the demands placed by the varied range of cyber services to be delivered by the NDEC.

This position will challenge your skills and you will have the flexibility to mould the role to suit your strengths and career development interests ranging from Cyber Consultancy through to development of Secure Digital Solutions. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are motivated, committed and keen to learn. A self-starter who is able to manage their time, show initiative and has a genuine interest in digital technology.

Key responsibilities and tasks:

  • Capturing and managing Cyber facility requirements.
  • Ensuring Cyber facilities are set up to deliver planned Cyber Services for internal and external customers.
  • Assisting in the delivery of Cyber Services.
  • Creating Cyber Assessment reports.
  • Supporting the design, documentation, code, test and correct moderately complex systems from supplied specifications, using agreed standards and tools.
  • Participates in reviews.
  • Contributes to Cyber Service Delivery by delivering elements of projects on time and to the standards expected by the team/function.
  • Use of Cyber processes and methodologies and tools as required.
  • Develop the necessary skills and experience through training, mentoring and the e-HR processes.
  • Observe appropriate quality, safety and environmental procedures, practices and work instructions at all time.

Skills, experience and qualifications:

  • Experience in setting up network equipment and network topologies.
  • Good communication and inter-personal skills.
  • Effective personal organisation.
  • Shows a keen interest in cyber and digital technologies.
  • Ability to put knowledge and experience into practice with significant levels of support from more experienced colleagues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with peers.
    Self-motivated, innovative and willing to exercise initiative.
  • Able to overcome barriers and make things happen.
  • Collaborative, mobile & flexible to meet demands of customer engagement and cross team working.
  • Inquisitive, curious and proactive in learning new technologies / business practices.
  • Self-motivated, entrepreneurial, innovative & willing to exercise initiative.
  • Relevant Engineering Degree, or equivalent IT qualifications.
  • Security-oriented mind-set.
