Oliver Croucher

2019 Sales and Business Development Graduate

Whist at University I was lucky enough to have a 6 month integrated placement at General Dynamics as a Market Analyst. This allowed me to gain my first experience of the Defence industry and work on some really interesting projects.

From my experience and interactions across several business areas at General Dynamics, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in the Defence Industry, specifically with a focus on Business Development. I used some competitor analysis work to collate a list of industry leaders that offered graduate opportunities in this area, Thales being one of them.

I then went through the recruitment process at Thales, which included an online test, assessment centre and then a final interview that also required me to present my analysis and recommendations of a business case study.

After accepting the role as a Sales and Business Development Graduate, I began my Thales career working in the Maritime Missions Systems (MMS) area of the company based in Templecombe. I have supported several projects so far, most notably Selborne, which aims to deliver the new UK Naval Training Service.

Having gained valuable experience throughout my first year, I am now responsible for overseeing the sales of Communication & Acoustic Products (CAP) and our Mine Obstacle Avoidance Sonar (MOAS), as well as continuing to support with Selborne.

What I enjoy about working for Thales

My first year at Thales has been great, I have met some amazing people and expanded my knowledge and experience by working on some really exciting projects.

I personally really enjoy that no day is ever the same. One day I will be solving problems with my bid team, the next I will be trying to secure sales with a potential customer abroad. One day I am helping to hold competitor analysis events in a hotel, the next I am visiting a naval base and seeing our products/services in action. It really does make the job enjoyable every day, you are definitely never bored!

I have also loved taking part in several “extra-curricular” tasks and projects such as helping to organise company events (The Big Bang, University Fairs and Charity Sky Dives). On top of this, the group activities/training we have been able to attend with the other graduates have been a lot of fun and has allowed me to make a lot of friends from other Thales' sites.

Thales really looks after and appreciates its staff which makes it a great company to work for. This, tied with the opportunity for personal progression and travel, is why I would recommend the Business Graduate Scheme to anyone leaving University!
