What you will be doing: 

While ‘in the office’ you will be working within the Payload Test & Validation team of Airbus’s Spacecraft Production group in Portsmouth, where we are responsible for the functional testing of satellite payloads; specialising in Telecommunication, Earth Observation, Navigation, and Scientific payloads. As the Test branch of Spacecraft Production, we face the important challenge of verifying payload performance against customer requirements and our expected predictions; specifically validating the electrical & thermal, and RF performance of the communications module. The goal is to demonstrate to the customers, that we build a product that fully meets their requirements and will remain operational in orbit for decades.

You will be working on the following aspects payload testing:

  • Preparation of the Electrical, Thermal and RF test procedures in line with test requirements.
  • Test phase planning and sequencing.
  • Engineering support to the cleanroom Operations team.
  • Coordination of test campaigns in the cleanroom, collaborating between the test operations team and other project team members.
  • Liaising with the Project Managers to achieve successful project milestone reviews with associated document inputs. 
  • Support the weekly and monthly reporting to the project team and to the department management team.
  • Work hand-in-hand with the quality team to ensure adherence to standard processes.
  • Contributing to the long term development of test processes and automation.
  • Developing an understanding of aerospace manufacturing within the industry.

Skills:

In order to be eligible for this exciting apprenticeship opportunity, you must have any of the following;

  • 3 A Levels – grade C or above (to include mathematics) or
  • BTEC vocational qualification at Level 3 or
  • Level 3 apprenticeship or
  • Equivalent qualifications

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;

  • Basic knowledge of Electrical and RF principles and test techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of Electrical and RF Test Systems and RF instruments (e.g. Network analysers, Spectrum
  • Analysers, Power Meters; RF Amplifiers, Oscilloscopes; etc)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with good communication skills.
  • MS Office (Word, Excel)
  • Analysis skills and methodical approach to problem resolution and investigations.
  • Result processing
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Visual Basic (Excel Macros)
