Overview of the role: 

Right now, we're looking for a Rail Telecoms Systems Engineering Apprentice to join our team in London. 

This role as a Rail Telecoms Systems Engineering apprentice is an opportunity to work as part of our multi-disciplinary design teams delivering a portfolio of varied rail projects as part of an established and expanding Rail Business. You'll help us to deliver effective and professional services for a range of varied and high-profile clients such as Network Rail, HS2, and many others. The role will be primarily focussed on the rail sector, although there will be the opportunity to work in other sectors as the need arises. 

Our Rail Telecoms team sits within the Advanced Digital Engineering (ADE) business at Arup. ADE is a diverse team of over 300 expert consultants, bringing together integrated combinations of outstanding digital and data-related capabilities with world leading engineering and design strengths. Being part of ADE means that we often have the chance to apply our technical knowledge to different sectors, and the opportunity to look at how to implement new technology into the rail industry to meet our client's needs.  

This role will include the design and specification of the following types of systems along with technology appraisal, site surveys and overseeing the installation and bringing into service of systems:  

  • Railway Operational Telecom Systems (Operational Telephony, Copper, Fibre, FTN, FTNx, GSM-R & associated transmission systems)  
  • Station Information and Surveillance Systems (SISS) including CCTV, PA/VA, Customer Information systems, Passenger Help Points  
  • DOO (Driver Only Operation)  
  • SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems  
  • Station Management Systems 
  • Control room technology 
  • IT communications infrastructure including IT routes, rooms, risers, copper and fibre optic cabling  
  • Local area networks, wireless LANs, telephony, unified communications  
  • Radio and cellular distributed antenna systems 

Rail Telecoms Systems Engineering apprentices will use and apply engineering principles and techniques to solve problems. They will support the development and production, analysis and planning of railway engineering designs which will be used to construct, maintain or improve rail systems.  

You'll support a variety of different work, including: 

  • Production of engineering drawings and sketches, including 3D or 2D computer drawings 
  • Production of Building Information Models (BIM) 
  • Preparation of engineering calculations 
  • Contributing to solutions for design challenges 
  • Taking part in design meetings, site visits, presentations and workshops 
  • Helping with the administration of projects

From your first day you'll join a community of experts, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards an accredited qualification. 

This apprenticeship includes study at London South Bank University for a degree qualification, BEng (Hons) in Rail and Rail Systems Engineering (Telecom, Networks and Digital). This course focuses especially on the Telecom, Networks and Digital aspects of the railway telecommunication systems, their reliability requirements and their specific nature of operation. 

What we're looking for:  

We're looking for dynamic and dedicated individuals to join us as apprentices. If you are keen to build a fulfilling career in the rail telecoms and system engineering sector and deliver excellent services for clients, we'd like to hear from you.

We're looking for the following qualifications, attributes and skills: 


  • A Level BBB including Mathematics and/or Physical Sciences (120 UCAS points) or; 
  • BTEC National Diploma DDM, including Level 3 Mathematics and Physical Sciences (128 UCAS points) or; 
  • Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 120 UCAS points and including Mathematics and Physical Sciences 
  • All applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above). GCSE
  • Maths must be a Grade B/5 or above.

Other skills: 

  • Confident working with numbers 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills  
  • High attention to detail 
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office  
  • Interest in using computers for design work and calculations 
  • The ability to work as part of a team 
  • Self-motivated inquisitive learner  
  • Lots of enthusiasm for this learning and development opportunity 
  • Previous experience of technical drawing/graphic design or use of CAD/3D modelling software (desirable)
  • Previous experience of basic computer programming even if self-taught (desirable) 

You must be available to start this opportunity in August 2022.
