A service designer to join our existing service design, user experience design and strategic design capability, and help develop our digital consulting business across a wide range of relevant sectors. We welcome individuals with particular interest in designing services and experiences for the built environment.

The role will be to assist the Arup Digital Studio team, joining our existing front-line capability of architects, interaction designers and strategic designers, with an expanding workload and to offer complementary and new skills to growing this area of work in Arup's London Office.

The position will be based in London but it is expected that the successful candidate will be willing to travel to other offices (including international locations) and work there for short periods.
Your work will include designing and supporting client and collaborator workshops, as well as conducting user research, using tried and tested human-centred design processes (using aspects of ethnography, interviews, surveys, design probes and so on.) You will help turn original research into insights, and then core service design deliverables, such as service blueprints, user journeys and various forms of mapping. You will create sets of personas, drawn from demographic research, and co-create scenarios that identify practical yet opportunities for how digital services can support delivery, operations and customer experience. You will aid with prototyping and testing of potential products and services (at high level), mapping against identified opportunities, personas, and case studies.
You will be an experienced practitioner in one or more of service design, user experience design, interaction design, technology-led prototyping or equivalent design disciplines.
You should be an innovative problem solver, someone who thinks ‘outside the box' and who is able to communicate ideas and solutions. You should have a positive and forward-thinking approach and enjoy working as part of a friendly and supportive team. Workload will be diverse and the ability to multi-task and manage your workload is important.

The Studio's clients can often by overseas, so the ability to travel for work on occasion, to a reasonable amount, and arranged suitably in advance, will be required.
You will have a strong academic background and preferably some practical experience. A first degree in Service Design or Interaction Design (or similar) preferred. We would also welcome individuals with degrees in Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Anthropology, Architecture, Product Design, Digital Design with experience in combining original research and system thinking into creating systems for the built environment.
A relevant MSc (or equivalent) is desirable but not essential.
You will have strong communication skills and be able to persuasively communicate your ideas through verbal presentation, writing, and/or graphic design. Preference will be given to those with experience deploying applied research and service design solutions.
