Overview of role:

We're looking for Apprentice Environmental Consultants to join our team in London or Bristol. From your first day you'll join a community of experts, where everyone is supported in their career path and encouraged to work towards an accredited qualification. You would work alongside and be taught by the environmental and sustainability experts who work on development, infrastructure and environmental enhancement projects in the UK and overseas to support tackling the major challenges of society: transitioning to a net zero economy, tackling the biodiversity crisis, creating thriving and socially beneficial cities and keeping our water, energy and transport utilities functioning. Find out more about what our Environmental Consulting team do here.

You'll help us to deliver environmental and sustainability services for a range of public and private sector clients. We'll give you the chance to develop your technical knowledge, project management, teamwork and communication skills in a professional environment and get the opportunity to see the projects you've been working on come to life.

Environmental Consulting:

As an Apprentice Environmental Consultant, with Arup you will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours in the following areas:

  • Technical knowledge of environmental and sustainability issues working with a range of specialists in air quality, archaeology and heritage, carbon, climate resilience, contaminated land, ecology, landscape, noise and vibration, water, waste and resource management;
  • Programme and project management;
  • Research, information management and report writing;
  • Contract and financial management;
  • Teamwork and communication skills.

These competencies will be developed through practical on-the-job training, working with experienced environmental and sustainability consultants and classroom-based training with Arup and a local University. You will be assigned a mentor within the Arup environmental consulting team who you will work and liaise closely with in your day-to-day work. During your day to day work you will have the opportunity to contribute to the planning and design of environmental projects through the collection and preparation of data, presentation of written information and analysis to determine the impacts upon the environment and people associated with the design, construction and operation of buildings, development and infrastructure projects.

The apprenticeship will run over a 5-6 year period, during which time you will undertake a supervised programme of training and block/day release with a local University. Upon completion of the apprenticeship, and subject to your overall performance, there is an opportunity to go onto further study and achieve professional qualifications.

  • Have successfully completed a relevant Level 3 Technician Apprenticeship
  • Have five GCSEs (or equivalent qualification) at grade C / 5 or above which must include English, Maths and Science.
  • Able to think in a methodical way to design, plan and organise projects;

  • Awareness of environmental and sustainability issues and a desire to work in an environmental consultancy;
  • Willing to learn and find new, innovative and creative ways to solve problems;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and an interest finding digital solutions for environmental and sustainability issues;
  • Able to organise your own work, be on time, to work as part of a team;
  • Willing to commit to the 5-6 year apprenticeship qualification.
