Overview of role:  

You would be joining our team of technicians in Arup where you would support the technical delivery of projects, where your role could include drawing preparation, visualisations and data analysis. Our studies can vary from large highway projects, rail studies, supporting development masterplans, to undertaking Active Travel investigations. 

This role is designed to offer a large amount of work-based learning in Civil Engineering, which forms the basis of the graduate apprenticeship course at Heriot Watt University. There is a formal day release to the university campus for lectures and tutorials, alongside coursework and reports written based upon work-based learning done with Arup. 

The purpose of this programme is to produce graduates with the required skills, knowledge and attributes to fulfil the role of Civil Engineer with key skills of project management and the important attributes and behaviours to make them responsible and reflective problem-solvers, critical-thinkers and managers. 

The Graduate Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering degree is designed to produce graduates with: 

  • the ability to select appropriate techniques, procedures and technology and use relevant theoretical knowledge and understanding of key concepts and materials; 
  • scientific and mathematical knowledge and understanding; 
  • skills in the use of appropriate technologies and digital platforms used in civil engineering; 
  • skills in the collection and critical analysis of data, combined with appropriate critical-thinking and problem-solving ability; 
  • skills to design and evaluate civil engineering solutions and to communicate them in an appropriate way; 
  • the ability to plan and manage projects, including managing and monitoring risk, operating and evaluating performance and managing and allocating tasks and resources; 

What are we looking for?  

For this opportunity, we are seeking the following qualifications, skills and attributes:  

  • SQA Highers at AAAB or ABBBB (including Maths); OR  
  • A-Levels with a minimum of 126 UCAS points or above; OR 
  • Scottish Baccalaureate Pass; OR 
  • Foundation Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering in conjunction with SQA Highers at AAB (Mathematics desirable but not essential).  
  • You must have a National 5/Standard Grade Maths or equivalent.  
  • Experience with some CAD software is desirable. Specifically, AutoCAD or Bentley products. 
  • Experience with GIS software desirable but not required. 
  • Ability to research and apply knowledge. 
  • Have the confidence to both write and present reports both to colleagues and fellow students. 

You must be available to start this opportunity in August 2022.
