Introduction to Digital Services at Arup

Climate change, urbanisation and rapid advances in technology are changing our world, creating new challenges for our clients. The convergence of the physical and digital worlds is bringing new ways of enhancing productivity and efficiency, increasing resilience, reducing risk and operational cost, extending asset life, and cutting carbon within our built and natural environment.

Our Digital Services teams combine specialist advisory services and expertise in data analytics, user-centred design, software development, modelling, simulation, geospatial analysis and visualisation with our traditional skills in engineering, planning and design. We provide strategic advice on the role of digital technology and build tools and solutions to solve complex challenges in the built and natural environment. We help our clients understand physical assets on completely new levels and gain value from data generated to unravel the complexity and provide actionable insights for businesses, utilities, and cities.

Opportunities available within Digital Services

Digital Studio

Designers are central to the Studio's process and take a considerable share of responsibility for the success of our work. An ideal candidate will take part in the following activities:

  • Support with conducting research (including desk research, user interviews, spatial or behavioural observations) to generate understanding of spatial and social challenges and inform design work;
  • Independently create compelling drawings for new design concepts for spaces, buildings, districts, products, and/or digital interventions. These can vary in level of fidelity, ranging from hand sketches through to line drawings, illustrations, perspective renderings and/or plans. These should help communicate concepts to a range of technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Support with creating mockups and prototypes for digital design concepts, such as storyboards, wireframes, user journeys and/or visual renderings, that articulate the desired user experience;
  • Support with creating mock-ups and prototypes of spatial interventions and testing these with future users;
