Due to our global reach and multi-disciplinary approach, Arup have been successful in the assessment and development of major sites for more than 30 years. We typically take on challenging sites, and by the application of our skills, and in collaboration with colleagues and other professionals, we prepare the sites to be consented and enabled for a range of end uses including:

  • Small to large mixed-use developments, including housing and employment uses
  • Transport facilities, Rail Depots and Highway Improvement Schemes
  • Public Spaces
  • Urban infrastructure
  • Energy generation and distribution
  • Flood mitigation, water and environmental enhancement and sustainable drainage schemes (SuDS)
  • Support on wide range of projects in the built environment including designing external drainage, utilities, highways and public realm for hospitals, sports stadia, educational and commercial buildings
  • The experience and skills of our teams allow us to provide advice at all stages of a project, from first conception through masterplanning, detailed design and construction.

Current projects are varied, exciting and often high profile. They include the design of external works for major developments and of infrastructure across the north west of England and Yorkshire, international projects, and site development projects on brownfield land where our integrated approach can radically influence what is built and where, improving the quality of peoples' lives and of the local environment.

Many people around the world use and enjoy our work every day, however not many people are aware of the projects we are involved in. This short animation shows some of the projects and our approach.


We are looking for a dynamic, flexible, and enthusiastic undergraduate Civil Engineer to join our team in Manchester for an 6 - 8 week summer placement in July and August.

You will provide support to team members to deliver engineering calculations and design based work.

You would be working with other engineers to help design roads, rail and transportation improvements, earthworks, drainage and utility networks, pavements, public realm, and civil structures projects.

The deliverables you contribute to will include:

  • Technical reports,
  • Calculations,
  • Spatial information, including drawings and model files,
  • Presentations,
  • Technical specifications.

What we look for

Our Civil Engineers must demonstrate drive and motivation, a willingness to learn about our sector, and a desire to effectively deliver an excellent service to our clients. As such, we are looking for the following qualifications, skills and attributes in you:-

  • Working towards a degree in Civil Engineering, at predicted 2.1 or above
  • Studying, or have studied, an ICE accredited course
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong numerical skills
  • Ability to quickly process broad information to draw logical conclusions
  • Possess a strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • An understanding of CAD and BIM is an advantage.
