Arup · A Short Introduction

Many people around the world use and enjoy our work every day, however not many people are aware of the projects we are involved in. This short animation shows some of the projects and our approach.

Advanced Digital Engineering

We are a centre of excellence for digital in Arup. We combine advanced digital, engineering, technical, and project expertise to add new value for clients.

Arup's Advanced Digital Engineering group comprises over 300 advanced engineering, digital and project consultants, bringing together a seamless combination of digital and data-related capabilities with Arup's traditional engineering and design strengths. We use this to solve our clients most complex challenges and help them respond effectively to the fast-changing digital world. We combine advanced digital expertise in data, models, analytics, and user centred design, with world-class specialist engineering skills such as advanced dynamics, vibration and wind engineering, as well as digital advisory services, mobility consulting and digital product design and delivery.

We support Arup's longstanding commitment to work on the most interesting and innovative projects by using the right modelling, data, technology and automation capabilities to redefine the built environment with our clients. We provide digital advisory services that focus on working with clients on their digital strategy, design of new services, systems and assets, and helping deliver working solutions along with the development of new analysis tools and other cloud enabled digital services for clients.

Digital Studio

Within ADE, Studio is our small strategic and user experience design team. Being a multidisciplinary team, we combine expertise in architecture – social sciences – and technology to deliver the best strategies, services, and concepts to our clients.

At our core is an aim to help the built environment become more imaginative, innovative, and human-centred. We ground the ideas we deliver in research, and make ideas tangible through prototyping and user testing.

The Studio's clients include technology companies like Alphabet's Google and Sidewalk Labs, Ericsson R&D, Samsung and Punkt, urban development companies like British Land and Lendlease, districts like Melbourne Innovation District and Stratford Waterfront, infrastructure providers such as Highways England and Heathrow Airport, campuses for University of Melbourne and Wellcome Trust, buildings like Collingwood Arts Precinct, Google's new Kings Cross headquarters, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, and city governments in Amsterdam, Melbourne, Sheffield, and London, amongst others. We also collaborate with academic partners like the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL, RMIT University in Melbourne, Royal College of Art and many others.

What are we looking for?

We're currently looking for a unique Summer Placement student to join our existing strategic design studio for a period of 6 - 8 weeks from May 2019, to develop innovative new user experiences for the built environment.

We welcome the unique blend of architects:

  • With particular interest and experience in combining spatial design, digital technology, and user research.
  • Who can create compelling 3D visualisations, architectural drawings, and renderings to illustrate concepts and tell stories about how people will use space.
  • Who critically question a materials-only focus to architecture.
  • Who are confident in their personal practice but comfortable in collaborating in a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Who can deliver bold creative ideas but also create exciting ways to engage with communities.
  • Who can generate radical ideas but also listen to data.

You will have the drive to excel in your chosen career and enjoy this challenge and the satisfaction that accompanies success.

What will Arup offer you?

The opportunity to thrive in a fast-paced and diverse working environment. Arup searches for the highest calibre recruits and supports and encourages enhancement of skills and career advancement.

The position will be based in London but it is expected that the successful candidate will be willing to travel to other offices (including international locations) and work there for short periods.

Your work will include:

  • Independently create compelling drawings for new concepts for buildings, cities, products, digital interventions. These could be technical drawings and plans, but also renderings, perspective line drawings, illustrations or hand drawings to help communicate the idea to a non-technical audience.
  • Support with designing and facilitating workshops for clients, collaborators, and communities.
  • Support with conducting research (including user interviews, spatial observations) to generate understanding of spatial challenges and deliver new concepts for interventions.
  • Support with creating mock-ups and prototypes of spatial interventions (for example public furniture or digital totems) and user testing these.

What will you offer Arup?

Personal profile

You should be an innovative problem solver, someone who thinks ‘outside the box' and who is able to communicate ideas and solutions. You should have a positive and forward-thinking approach and enjoy working as part of a friendly and supportive team. Workload will be diverse and the ability to multi-task and manage your workload is important.

An enquiring mind is key to our approach, as we work across numerous diverse contexts. You will be able to assimilate such new contexts rapidly, and to use various design techniques to help make sense of them, for colleagues, clients and collaborators.

Arup offers its employees opportunities to become involved in activities and areas of work beyond the scope of any job description. You should be a well-rounded person in terms of interests and ambitions as we look forward to you getting involved and becoming fully integrated into the Arup community.

The Studio's clients can often be overseas, so the ability to travel for work on occasion, to a reasonable amount, and arranged suitably in advance, will be required.
