Bridge & Civil Structures

A career in any of our UK Bridge and Civil Structures' teams provides an exciting, inspiring, and rewarding environment in which to work and develop. We are a truly diverse team collaborating and delivering a vast range of projects, of all scales, throughout the UK and across the globe. Our work covers the full range of civil engineering structures, bridges and tunnels and we are a driving force behind many major infrastructure projects. As the industry rapidly transforms through the use of digital technology, we aim to be the leading digital consultancy in the built environment. In Bridge and Civil Structures this entails us being at the leading edge in the use of technology such as; 3D solid modelling, automation tools, coding, databases and data analytics. As such we are looking for graduates with an aptitude and interest in developing in these areas alongside the more traditional engineering skills.

Civil Engineering

Our Civil Engineers can find themselves working in partnership with our experts in buildings, bridges, tunnels, geotechnics, environmental consulting and transport planning. Energy, collaboration, and effective communication is fundamental to bring these elements together as our Civil Engineering teams are often at the core of these disciplines acting as integrators or facilitators. Our teams also work closely with many external bodies to deliver the project, from clients and architects to statutory approval organisations. Our core skills in the Civil Engineering teams typically include masterplan development, sustainable drainage designs, flood risk management, maritime ports, pavement designs, earthworks assessments, access road design and utilities coordination.

Ground Engineering

Our Ground Engineering Specialists apply their skills to buildings and infrastructure projects across the globe. Our areas of expertise include civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, geology / geohazards, geo-environmental and hydrogeology. We offer our clients a broad spectrum of expertise and consulting services in a wide variety of areas including building developments and area masterplans, design for highways, railways, energy facilities, mining and water infrastructure projects as well as design of education, sports and leisure facilities.

Around the world, we are helping national road operators plan for connected and autonomous vehicles on their networks by advising on key investment decisions, transitional commitments and trialling new technologies. In the UK, Arup is leading the UK Autodrive consortium which is evaluating the complex implementation issues and business models presented by autonomous vehicles. We work with governments to develop future scenarios to help improve planning decisions and supported Highways England as they developed their first innovation, technology and research strategy identifying projects and trials to improve safety and tackle congestion on the UK's roads.

Our core skills in the Highways teams range from geometric alignment design, surface water drainage design and building of intelligent 3D models; through to stakeholder engagement and project management. We are looking for candidates with an appetite to develop their engineering, digital and management abilities whilst working on large multi-disciplinary projects from feasibility stage through to construction.

Our infrastructure systems experts combine rail systems and operational knowledge with systems engineering and safety management expertise to develop fully integrated railway designs which meet the needs of government, rail operators, the travelling public and others impacted by the railway. These designs may be for a new railway (or other guided transport system), for an extension to an existing system, or an enhancement by the introduction of a new technology. We support projects throughout the project lifecycle in integration, interface management, requirements management and verification and validation. We also provide specialist Systems Engineering services such as Systems Safety; Performance, Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (PRAM) and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).
