Job Description:

We are currently recruiting for a Graduate Manufacturing Technology Engineer (O2)- Specialising in Data systems to join our Engineering team based in Aycliffe.

Location – At our state of the art manufacturing facilities in Aycliffe.

Graduate Programme – Successful candidates will have a fantastic opportunity to complete two placements within up to 24 months at any of the locations mentioned above before settling down at your preferred site. Support is offered with the transition between the various locations.


Salary - £31,262 starting salary plus excellent benefits package

  • Right to live and work in the UK
  • Predicted or achieved a minimum 2:1 degree in a Engineering/science based degree
  • 300 UCAS points at A-Level (or equivalent qualification) including at least one STEM subject.
  • Valid UK driving licence is preferred but not essential.

  • Some experience with Statistics
  • Previous experience within a manufacturing environment is desired but not essential

Job Responsibilities

The role of a Manufacturing Engineer at 3M will offer an incredible level of variety and our Graduate Engineers are expected to develop and implement practical, effective improvements to the day to day challenges faced. Working as part of a highly focused and driven team of engineers, the projects will include topics such as:

  • Evolution of area and site metrics,
  • Data acquisition,
  • Data analysis,
  • Reporting and integration into Lean methodology

The use of this Data and its analysis will be used to help drive:

  • Future vision and implementation of how sites data systems (Process and production) will evolve
  • Waste reduction and quality improvements
  • Line optimisation
  • Process / productivity improvements
  • New product introduction
  • Improvements through supply chain organisation from customer orders to finished goods.

To be effective in this role, you will need to develop the skills to become a high performing engineer and 3M will support you in doing so. You’ll become knowledgeable about our developing technologies, the quality systems that surround our manufacturing processes and learn to work with people at all levels of the organisation - from the machine operators to the senior managers. You’ll be trained in Lean Six Sigma methods and tools and will use these to analyse and improve the processes across the site.

Example projects that you would typically be involved in:

  • Further developing site metrics and measures – Standardising the approach between departments. Making accurate data available and relevant to the people who need it across the whole supply chain organisation.
  • Process / Product improvement – working as part of a team to use data to help us drive the right decisions using Lean Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Further developing our machine data acquisition – working with Instrumentation and control engineering to further develop systems that allow us real-time process information that we can use to optimise our manufacturing processes and products
  • Product and Process Qualification / Optimisation– Helping to design and run Design of experiments.
  • Quality Improvement – Projects involve working alongside the quality engineering team to understand historical trends and production data to further develop specifications.
  • Lean Projects – Model processes to optimise machine changeovers, manufacturing floor space, customer order patterns and raw material requirements etc.

Training and Development

During this first year on assignment you will have the chance to develop your skills and experience in an industry that is making radical changes to the way products are manufactured. You will take part in the Emerging Talent Training programme as well as having access to over 20 days of specific personal development training alongside graduates from other disciplines within the organisation.

The training programme includes learning about Six Sigma techniques, Engineering skills, Finance for Engineers and an introduction to Chartership. Training sessions are built around the required competencies for a successful Engineer and the projects are also structured to involve the use of different competencies.
