About us

National Highways operates, maintains and improves England’s strategic road network made up of motorways and major A roads. These vital arteries account for a third of all traffic, carry two thirds of heavy goods vehicles, and are relied on by 98% of the UK’s businesses.

Increasing levels of investment are leading to all manner of innovations. But with 4,300 miles of motorway, 20,000 highway bridges including bridges, underpasses, retaining walls and other kinds of structures, our work continually increases in scale and complexity. Not least as we bring £27.4 billion-worth of projects to life, boosting capacity, tackling congestion and improving safety.

We are Highways England

This short film describes the purpose of Highways England. Our purpose sits at the heart of everything we do. It drives what we do and how we do it. We exist to connect the country.

About the programme

National Highways is proudly introducing its very first Year in Industry placements. If you are currently in your 3rd year at university and are considering a career in Civil Engineering, then we may have the perfect placement opportunity for you. Our 1 year programme will provide you with exposure to different areas of our Safety, Engineering and Standards Division and the wider National Highways. You will gain experience in areas such as Asset Management and the work of our Technical Approval Authority who oversee all aspects of highway structures from creating and maintain design standards through to maintenance and eventually demolition, all whilst focusing on the engineering. You will gain a breadth of experience whilst undertaking work that makes a real difference to our organisation.

We’ll support your development throughout the 1 year placement, where you will be working with colleagues from across the National Highways. This is a chance to learn on the job in a large organisation that spends £393m of funding. A great way for you to  supplement your final year at University and help you step up into the jobs market when you finish your course.
