Location: Hybrid working with office location at Pity Me, Durham and mobile work in the North-East (Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Teesside)
At Northumbrian Water Group (covering the North East, Essex & Suffolk), we’re preparing for a £6 billion investment programme running from 2025 to 2030, aiming to increase the resilience of our water and wastewater services while restoring and regenerating our environment.
To achieve successful delivery of this investment we’re seeking four Development/Graduate Project Engineers to join our Engineering Team in our North-East operating region. We are aiming for a start date of September 2025 at the latest, but can bring start dates forward depending on candidate availability and experience (as early as May 2025).
You will be joining a multi-discipline team of Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Civil, Process, Geo-Technical and Environmental Engineers who will mentor you through a structured training programme to gain valuable project experience.
You will learn how to support construction projects from a technical perspective within the water industry, and gradually develop the autonomy to deliver your own projects with risk, value and complexity relative to your competence on the programme.
This is a Trainee/Graduate scheme where on-the-job learning and your structured development programme will provide valuable mentoring, coaching, and training to provide you with the necessary skills and experience. The role will develop into a full Project Engineer position within the Engineering team when all objectives have been attained and competencies demonstrated.
As part of your development programme there will be the opportunity to gain experience within our Strategic Technical and Design/Construct Partners - focusing on design, commissioning and construction.
We act as a Client Engineering function; setting the Standards which designs should be delivered to; supporting the successful planning, launch and delivery of projects; and taking a lead role at key points such as Design Acceptance and Commissioning. The role covers full end-to-end project delivery with a wide range of exposure to on-site construction work, delivering environmental improvements and solving real problems.
You will be studying an Engineering, Environmental or Science degree and be on track to achieve a 2:1 or above, or can demonstrate relevant industry experience in substitution of the academic qualification. You should be passionate about making a difference to the environment, the net-zero challenge, and demonstrate necessary behaviours to deliver positive change for our customers and communities.
As you will be working within a team, we’re looking for you to be able to work collaboratively, using your proven communication skills to engage. You will also participate in assignments, structured training, and other opportunities across the organisation and wider design supply chain.
Innovation is at the heart of everything we do, which means we would love you to bring new ideas and ways of working to help us improve. This will help contribute to our vision to be national leader.
A driving license is essential for this role as you will need to travel between various site locations. Assessment centres will be week commencing the 13th January 2025, with interviews on week commencing the 20th January 2025.
We’re a Great Place to Work because of the amazing people who work for us, and to say thank you we offer a range of benefits to colleagues. Our ‘Tap Into’ benefits include:
This role has also been defined as a safety or security critical role and as a condition of a formal offer of employment you’ll be required to undergo a drug and alcohol test. Prospective employees and agency workers in defined safety and security critical roles will be required to undertake a drug and alcohol test after the job offer has been made. This will be prior to or within four weeks of their start date.
