Winner of the prestigious Constructing Excellence Project of the Year Award 2016, Children’s Hospital for Wales is the first dedicated hospital for children to be built in Wales.
The state-of-the-art facility is all about providing clinical excellence in a child-friendly environment. Opened over two phases – the first in 2005 – we were involved in both phases of the build. The second part of the project included the delivery of wards, specialist intensive care and operating theatres, outpatients and a dedicated radiology department.
The client’s challenge to us was to deliver world-class services in keeping with the vision for a truly child-friendly environment. They also needed us to do this in a way that was as environmentally conscious as possible.
Wellbeing was absolutely central to our solution. Our services and acoustic design was dedicated to creating reassuring spaces, without ‘scary’ or loud equipment – with child-focused systems. This meant creating easily controlled heating, ventilation, and lighting features. Allowing children and their families to adjust their environment – ensuring they feel as secure, comfortable, and relaxed as possible.
This user-focused building also achieved the environmental goals the client wanted. It successfully attained a BREEAM Very Good rating, and an Outstanding rating in Energy Credit Ene 01. Our MEP designs also helped achieve a ‘50 percent carbon reduction on a notional building’.
The Phase 2 space opened an incredible eight weeks ahead of programme, under budget and exceeding the required quality standards. We are proud to have contributed to such a successful project.
