What do we do?

Caterpillar in Leicester are part of the Building Construction Products (BCP) division and responsible for manufacturing a range of world class Backhoe Loaders and Compact Wheel Loaders as part of the wider BCP range. Each of the product families has several machine models with differing power, capabilities and features. We focus on making products that are reliable, cost effective, versatile and adaptable, as these are essential for the competitive advantage of Caterpillar.

Leicester is more than just a production area, it is a full product development facility with global responsibility for its products. Our development facilities include: advanced 3D CAD systems on-line, full product prototyping and engineering capabilities and access to some of the most advanced Research and Development facilities in the world.

The Advanced engineering team within our BCP division offers some of the most exciting engineering roles within Caterpillar’s global organisation. Working on the evaluation and integration of new technologies across multiple Caterpillar products will provide you with the opportunity to work with multiple disciplines across a variety of technical systems (engine, transmission, hydraulics, electronics, automation, operator interface, etc.) within a global organisation.

We also operate a conditional offers process and our highest performing placement students will be fast tracked to our graduate development scheme with a conditional offer of employment upon returning to university. This includes a financial incentive and the potential for a summer work placement.

What will you be responsible for?

  • Requirements definition, including critical customer requirements, application profiles, competitive machine positioning
  • New component and system design
  • Validation and test, including computer simulation and predictive techniques, rig testing or overall machine testing
  • Collaboration with technical partners to ensure designs produced are suitable.

You will be given the support and coaching required to develop your technical capability and business understanding. We promote a hands-on approach, including being trained in machine operation. You will also be encouraged to spend time operating Backhoe Loader, Compact Wheel Loader and Mini Excavator machines to better understand customer applications. Within a short period of time you can become vital to the success of the Advanced Engineering department and accountable for key deliverables.

We will provide you with a mentor to support you throughout your professional development to help you gain Chartered or Incorporated Status.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for:

  • Applicants should be studying for a degree in Automotive/Aeronautical/ Electrical/Mechanical/Mechatronics/Motorsport/Systems/Controls/Product Design Engineering or Physics and should be on track to achieving a minimum of a 2:2.
  • Other relevant degrees will considered.
