The two-year Graduate Development Programme in Information Systems (IS) works with graduates who are seeking an exciting development opportunity in the field of Information Technology or Systems whilst learning about the wider business process and developing key management and leadership skills.

As a Graduate within IS, you will undertake a number of rotational placements over a two-year period, this will include either one overseas placement or a placement in the UK as part of a specialist project team. During the programme, you will gain an appreciation of various business technology processes from start to finish. You will work at a strategic level, understanding the departments KPI’s and objectives and how this strategy fits with the wider business on achieving the five-year business plan.

A mentor will be supporting you for the duration of the programme who will advise, support and guide you in your personal and career development. You will have a direct line manager in each placement who you will report to during the placement; you will also have regular reviews with the Early Careers Lead. A role post the Graduate Programme will be discussed throughout the programme in line with current business activity and growth and the areas that your skills and ambitions are best suited to.

Areas of responsibility

  • Involvement in Information Systems development projects, either running the project or as part of a larger team.
  • Requirements gathering from internal customers (key users/managers) and translating this into elegant solutions which may require application changes or process changes.
  • Supporting the programming team in writing technical specifications.
  • Assisting with the development of training material and change management documentation including end-user training.
  • Work towards becoming a certified Project Manager with specific knowledge and understanding of our core business functions in a continually changing environment in line with the growth ambitions of our business.
  • Take ownership and responsibility for own learning and development.
  • Where applicable, works towards professional chartership in their respective field.
  • Is actively involved in the promotional activities of Vacuum Technique and the Early Careers community.

Whilst on the programme, typical projects you may be involved in could include…

  • Rolling out ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems to newly acquired businesses.
  • Selecting and implementing new Supply Chain Planning.
  • Implementing a new e-commerce site.
  • Implementing IoT (Internet of Things) on our products.
  • Developing data analytics/ML (machine learning) on our business data.

Knowledge, skills and behaviours required

  • Degree educated, with a 2.1 or above (or predicted) in one of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Engineering/Manufacturing, Information Systems, or similar.
  • Technical applications changes (programming) is not required, but a good understanding and passion for business technology is essential.
  • Good discipline and methodical way of working.
  • Highly computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages including Excel and Word.
  • Ability to work on own initiative with a proactive approach to challenges.
  • Effective and confident communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Effective team working skills.
  • Highly motivated and able to build relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally.
  • Ability to influence individuals and teams to achieve desired goals and objectives.
  • Confident commercial awareness and clear business acumen.
  • Willingness to undertake national and international business travel, including the possibility of an overseas placement for up to 6 months.
