Edwards Exhaust Management Systems business is the worlds leading supplier of technology to abate toxic and global warming gases produced during the manufacture of microelectronic devices.

Edwards Exhaust Gas Management (EGM) division is seeking a Year in Industry Placement student to undertake development work in the Clevedon Gas Abatement Laboratory. The position will be within the innovation, development and applications (IDA) group; interacting with an interdisciplinary environment of engineers and scientists. The position will report to a Technologist.

Whilst on the programme…

  • The role requires an ability to work in an industrial lab environment and observe Edwards EHS rules and guidelines..
  • Analytical chemistry skills including; instillation of test gases, leak checking of test equipment, analysis of gases using equipment including FTIR, mass spec, electrochemical cells, analysis and write up of data.
  • Ability to contribute to innovative technology development or product improvement.
  • Carry out risk assessments on prototype equipment or lab test rigs and to operate them safely. Ability to interact with other members of the team.
  • Collect accurate data and writeup detailed and accurate reports on experimental work.
  • Ability to present and convey the results of this work in a concise and clear way to other members of the team.

Knowledge, skills and behaviours required

  • Chemistry or chemical engineering  Understanding of analytical techniques, detection limits, cross sensitivity, etc. Knowledge of gas phase FTIR and mass spectrometry, electrochemical cells would be of benefit. Any experience in gas chemistry is also of benefit
  • Ability to carry out a structured approach to problem solving, using the resources available to get the best supporting data in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ability to work under supervision in a lab environment on our Clevedon site.
  • Mechanically adapt is of benefit, being able to relate a chemical or process issue to a physical engineered solution. Instrumentation, electrical and software knowledge would be beneficial.
  • Operate within an industrial lab environment, conduct safety reviews prior to experiment build and operate in a safe and considerate manner
  • An understanding of safe gas plumbing using Swagelok or similar compression fittings, valves, mass flow controllers, sampling pumps, etc is beneficial.


The candidate will have completed the first two years of a Chemistry or chemical Engineering degree achieving an average of 2.1 or above. The position will report to a technologist and will be mentored by a development engineer / chemist depending on the discipline of the placement student

You will be based in our Clevedion Product Company, a short drive away from the vibrant city of Bristol
