About the Project
Costain helps to improve people’s lives by deploying technology-based engineering solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK’s energy, water and transportation infrastructures. Gatwick station currently experiences significant passenger congestion both at platform level and in the existing station concourse. The project seeks to provide a world class passenger interchange from plane to train. It will improve passenger experience by providing a new concourse which will reduce congestion, improve vertical circulation and provide an intuitive connection with airport terminals. Our contract with Network Rail is to provide GRIP 3 to 8 services, from concept design through to detailed design, construction, testing and commissioning and handover.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
The Engineer shall work with guidance to the review and management of the design information, the development and integration of Sub Contractor led designs and constructability reviews (managed by the Package Managers plus Others)
The resources and design accountabilities are provided from within the Supply Chain; the Design Engineer shall ensure that design production and acceptances are compliant with the project requirements and SCS goals
Explore the designs produced to demonstrate consideration by designers for safe construction by design
The production of design deliverables shall be managed by an agreed schedule. Deliverables are to satisfy high standards for safety, sustainability, constructability, quality, and cost. All works must be delivered in accordance with the contract requirements and deviations recorded - as per an agreed change control process
The Electrical Design Engineer will input into and assist in providing status updates within the design planning and reporting systems for each stage of MEP design assurance
The scope consists of multiple design components that span across varying systems. The Electrical Design Engineer shall assist to contribute to the day-to-day interactions with internal stakeholders (e.g., Construction Teams, Logistics etc.) as well as external interfaces when require, such as the Employer and third-party stakeholders (e.g., Network Rail etc)

Engage in lessons learnt, 360 and route cause reviews, internal and external, to inform the MEP systems design team in conjunction with constructability reviews, aligned with the project installation strategy
Interrogate the Electrical design and its interfaces to support procurement and construction, Safe by Design, minimise environmental impact with a view to future carbon neutrality, maximise opportunity for value engineering and check compliance to the scope
Design Management will extend into the construction delivery phase of the project and up to testing and commissioning where all assurances must be reached to evidence full completion of the works. Costain's Graduate Development Programme
The programme will focus on helping you to grow your personal and leadership skills, alongside business and of course, the technical skills you will learn day-to-day on the job. The programme is delivered in a variety of formats throughout the 2 years and will allow you to establish a network of contacts that will help and support you through your first 2 years and beyond.
We expect some of our graduates to rotate after a period of 8-12 months, to another project/sector of the business to fully understand the depth and breadth of the services offered by the company. Our line managers are fully supportive of the Graduate Development Programme and will be involved in helping you along the way.
In addition to the programme, we offer mentoring and support in every area of work, as well as a structured training programme to enable graduates to work towards achieving Chartership. Graduates may have the opportunity to work on a number of exciting and progressive projects around the UK during the 2-year period, in sectors including nuclear, highways, rail, water, airports and tunnels.
