ISIS is the Spallation Neutron Source located at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK. Operation centres on a high intensity proton synchrotron, which accelerates protons and deliveries them onto a heavy metal target for neutron production.

Efficient operation of the synchrotron requires a comprehensive knowledge of the proton beam dynamics. This beam information is obtained from a suite of beam diagnostic systems which provide information such as transverse beam position, beam intensity, beam profile and beam loss.

The Diagnostics Section is responsible for the design, installation, maintenance and operation of all beam diagnostic devices and their associated electrical, electronic and computer systems. In addition, the Diagnostics Section has an active programme for the development of novel diagnostic systems, for the current ISIS machine and future ISIS-II, which often require unique electronic and electrical solutions.

Summary of key duties & responsibilities

The job holder will become part of a multi-disciplined team and report to the Diagnostics (Operations) Section Leader.

The graduate post on offer will involve the following:

  • Design and develop new analogue/digital electronic systems and associated data acquisition, including circuit and PCB design/assembly/testing and commissioning to deliver the existing diagnostic programmes.
  • Contribute to accelerator diagnostic operations by maintaining hardware, calibrations and diagnosing/repairing failed systems.
  • Re-develop or upgrade outdated operational diagnostic electronic/electrical systems to ensure continued running of the ISIS accelerator complex.
  • Gaining familiarity and proficiency working with electronics design and simulation tools.
  • Contribute to and support the STFC Electrical/Electronics Apprentice training programme.
  • Advising on the best electronic/electrical solutions taking into account budgetary and time constraints, while delivering optimum performance and reliability
  • The successful candidate will be part of a team responsible for the design, installation, commissioning, maintenance and operation of beam diagnostic devices and their associated electrical, electronic and computer systems.

In addition the successful candidate will be expected to assist with the installation and maintenance of all diagnostics systems within the synchrotron environment. This will require the candidate to become a monitored radiation worker, occasional working outside normal working hours (i.e. commissioning tasks) and when trained to assist with on-call duties during ISIS operational periods.

A willingness to travel, nationally and internationally, for conferences, workshops and collaboration work would be useful.

In order to apply for the role we are looking for the following:


  • You’ll need to have, or be on course to achieve, a minimum 2:1 degree, in a relevant field of study
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK at time of starting employment
  • Knowledge/experience in Analogue / Digital / Mixed electronics (operational amplifiers, filters, comparators, ADCs, DACs, multiplexers, combinational/sequential design, etc.) and/or embedded system design.
  • Knowledge/experience in electronics simulation packages (analogue/digital).


  • MSc/MEng in Electronic Engineering
  • A/B grade A-level results in Mathematics, Electronics, Physics
  • Experience in design and manufacturing work (Schematic/PCB design, assembly, testing, calibration, etc.)
  • Knowledge/experience in programming languages (e.g. C, C++, Python, VHDL, etc.)
  • Knowledge/experience in data acquisition systems (e.g. National Instruments PXI and LabVIEW programming)
  • Knowledge of transducers/sensors, motion control or mechanical design would be an advantage
  • Practical skills (circuit testing, fault finding, use of test equipment, soldering)
  • Work experience (possible industry placement) in electronic design
  • Genuine interest in electronics and electronic design work
  • Interest in particle accelerators and large-scale science facilities
