The UKRI Microelectronics Centre based at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is a specialist Centre dedicated to stimulating and supporting the use of sophisticated microelectronics design flows within our large international customer base of more than 650 European Universities and Research Establishments. 

We have an opportunity for an industrial placement student to join a small team of highly qualified microelectronics engineers who will contribute to one of our projects while we will provide real-world experience!

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities  

This ambitious role will offer the opportunity to get directly involved in our projects. We work on a wide range of problems from novel device modelling, complex analogue circuits through reprogrammable FPGA based systems to large digital ICs implemented at very small transistor geometries. Valuable experience will be gained, and there will be an opportunity to demonstrate initiative and apply skills to challenging microelectronics problems. 

If you are currently studying for an MEng in Electronic Engineering (or similar) then there is a chance to join our team working on analogue circuits, RF analysis, device modelling or Photonic ICs. We recruit the best students and further opportunities may then exist to return to STFC after completion of your studies as a Graduate Engineer.

In order to apply for this role you must have:  


  • At university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry  
  • Right to live and work in the UK  
  • Studying relevant degree in Electronic Engineering or similar with degree content relevant to the vacancy 
  • Minimum of three A-levels at grade C or above one of which must be mathematics, or alternative qualifications, (e.g. BTEC/international examinations) of an equivalent level 
  • Clear, comprehensive, credible and coherent application, highlighting relevant skills and demonstrating good written skills 
  • Genuine interest in electronics microelectronics design or design flows 
  • Excellent understanding of fundamental principles of basic electronic circuits 
  • Aptitude for problem solving and diagnosis of ambitious problems 
  • Ability to use unmodified computing equipment and complex design tool packages for extended periods of time 
  • A conscientious, reliable and hardworking approach with good team working capabilities and excellent communication skills
