The ISIS neutron and muon source is a world leading research centre at STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire.  

At the heart of ISIS is a high power particle accelerator. The Low Energy Beams Group, (LEBG) is responsible for creating the initial particle beam and delivering it to the ISIS accelerator. The group also runs several test stands for accelerator research and development. The Electrical Section of the group is responsible for maintaining, supporting and developing all electrical and electronic equipment associated with the Low Energy Beams Group. This includes equipment required for both ISIS operations and for accelerator test stands.  

The equipment is a mix of commercial and in-house developed systems including: 100 A pulsed power supplies; 25 kV pulsed power supplies; 65 kV DC power supplies; temperature control systems; pulsed gas control systems; timing systems; interlock systems; and a host of smaller low voltage/low current power supplies and sub-systems required for monitoring and controlling the operation of ion source and low energy beam transport systems.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

During this industrial placement opportunity, the successful student will be undertaking the following tasks: 

  • Designing and building (with the support of the Electrical Section) a low light plasma diagnostics system 
  • Testing the low light plasma diagnostics system on a particle beamline 
  • Engaging with and support LEBG development and operational activities 

In order to apply for this role you must have:  

Essential:  

  • At university, enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and required or have requested to take a year out of studies to gain experience within industry  
  • Right to live and work in the UK  
  • Knowledge of basic electrical/electronic principles and concepts  
  • Conversant with engineering drawings and circuit diagrams 

Desirable:  

  • Good interpersonal skills  
  • Willing to work in radiation areas 
  • Experience of prototype electrical /electronic manufacturing assembly and testing 
  • Experience of electronic schematic drawing software and/or CAD packages 
  • Understanding of Low level analogue signal conditioning and processing using operational amplifiers
