We are currently seeking a Graduate - Sustainability to work principally in an off-project role in support of the Bechtel Infrastructure Carbon Reporting Manager, UK Regional Sustainability Manager and Head of Sustainability. Initially, in line with current flexible working arrangements the role is largely home-based with regular Teams enabled contact with the Line Manager. However, you must be able to work from our central London office 2-3 days per week and to attend meetings when required, as determined.

Sustainability as applied to the engineering and construction industry is a broad topic, encompassing eco-design, environmentally friendly construction, energy and water efficiency, low impact materials, and decarbonisation. Stakeholder and community engagement, creation of local economic opportunities and social value are also vital to sustainability within our industry.

This role will support Bechtel sustainability managers in collecting data, communicating, staying abreast of best practices and innovation. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn more about and potentially become certified in sustainable rating systems like BREEAM and CEEQUAL, Social Value, etc. 

Typical Responsibilities 

Immediate tasks will be carbon-focused, but there will also be opportunities to support implementation of the broader sustainability agenda. Other responsibilities include: 

  • Coordinating the GBU greenhouse emissions (Scope 1, 2 & 3) measurement and reporting, including data compilation, verification and assurance - for internal performance monitoring, and external required disclosures.
  • Supporting the continuous improvement of emissions and energy reporting systems, tools and procedures.
  • Supporting the Regional Sustainability Manager to implement and monitor the sustainability management system
  • Supporting projects in collecting data and application of sustainable design and construction tools
  • Supporting proposals in carbon opportunities analysis and emissions estimates
  • Staying abreast of carbon reporting tools and low carbon technologies
  • Capturing past and present sustainability project experience and accomplishments for use in tenders, external communications and qualifications, working closely with the external communications group and project teams.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Preferably a Masters degree in environmental science, policy, social science or other relevant field
  • Good analytical and data management skills
  • Good written and oral communications skills
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of climate change, carbon management and climate resilience
  • Knowledge of sustainable development concept and frameworks
  • Competency using Microsoft Excel, with Power BI and other relevant software tools preferred
