Where the STEM jobs are
Gradcracker works here's the proof
"I wanted to be somewhere where I could always be learning and always building on my skill-set."
Mary joined KPMG’s Technology Consulting programme and was placed in the Cyber Security team two years after graduating from the University of Sheffield with a BA in History and Politics. She stayed on at university to work at her student union but soon decided to seek out a different challenge.
"Primarily, I was looking for somewhere I could combine my interests in security and technology. I saw KPMG’s Technology Consulting programme online and it really appealed to me. The more I read about it, the more it seemed right.
I was worried that I lacked the technical experience, but decided to apply anyway. KPMG told me that my background didn’t matter and that they would give me full training.
Even after I landed the job I was still nervous. I was scared, like a lot of people, that the environment would be too corporate. I was a bit older than other grads, too, which made me a little worried. But from the word go everybody was very welcoming. Even when there were things I didn’t understand, people were willing to take the time to explain them to me.
One thing that really stands out is the genuine commitment to Corporate Responsibility. As a full-time KPMG employee, we can use our skills to volunteer up to six days a year on social mobility projects organised through the firm. I joined a network called Cyber Champions. We are able to travel to schools and teach kids about privacy, online safety, and so on. I’m able to share the knowledge I gain during my day-to-day to a wider audience. I believe it’s really important that we teach young people about these things because they’re often the most at risk.
KPMG is extremely flexible and supportive about it. We do visits during work because of school hours, and it’s totally OK. That’s just how it is here.
I wanted to be somewhere where I could always be learning and always building on my skill-set.
I’m still not sure what I want to do in the long term, but for now I can’t imagine anything other than continuing here at KPMG. The programme is so good at allowing you to choose your own path and exposing you to all kinds of different clients and industries."
