What first sparked your interest in the MTC and why did you apply?

I’d previously heard of the Catapult centres and the role they play bridging the gap between academia and industry, so when I spotted this scheme, I sent in an application. It was only when I visited that I was blown away by the scale of the operation and vibrant atmosphere, and I realised why it’s known as “the most amazing place nobody’s heard of”.

What were your first impressions of the MTC Graduate Programme?

The programme seems to me to be a brilliant opportunity to work with some of the best engineers in the country on some of the most interesting and ambitious projects.

Describe a typical day for you on the MTC Graduate Programme?

The work here is extremely varied and each day is usually completely different to the next. In my current role in the informatics theme, work could typically include activities such as researching and planning a meeting with a customer, conducting data analytics or producing a section of a technical report.

What’s been the biggest challenge?

Coming from a mechanical background, the biggest challenge for me so far has been integrating into the informatics theme, and finding my role within the team. It has been a steep learning curve and I have learned a lot from the experts in this rapidly-advancing field of manufacturing technology.

How has the Graduate Programme been beneficial to your career?

I believe the programme has and will be beneficial to my career in many ways, but most importantly it gives me the chance to explore different options and career paths, and work with industry-leading experts on a huge variety of projects. It also gives me the opportunity to progress rapidly towards Chartered Engineer status with the support provided on the Further Learning Programme and the Monitored Professional Development Scheme.

Would you recommend the programme to others, and what advice would you offer to those looking to apply to the MTC Graduate Programme?

I would definitely recommend the programme, even to those who have not considered a career in manufacturing engineering before. For anyone interested in developing cutting-edge technology which will have a profound effect on the future of the British economy, this is the place to do it.
