About Us

Renishaw is a FTSE 250 global engineering and scientific technology company, with core skills in measurement, motion control, additive manufacturing, healthcare, spectroscopy and manufacturing. We supply products and services that push the boundaries of what is possible in applications as diverse as jet engine and wind turbine manufacture, through to dentistry and brain surgery. We are also a world leader in the field of metal additive manufacturing (also referred to as 3D printing), where we design and make industrial machines that ‘print' parts from metal powder.

"It's all wrapped up in one straightforward process!"

We currently have 79 offices in 37 countries, with around 4,500 employees worldwide. Over 2,500 people are employed within the UK where we carry out the majority of our research and development, and manufacturing.

With a global presence in a broad range of sectors, we aim to ensure that our workforce reflects the diverse global communities we serve. Every year we welcome a wide range of new employees, from apprentices to experienced professionals. By joining Renishaw you will be making a difference to the world in which we live, in a global company that encourages innovation and personal achievement.

A summer placement at Renishaw offers you the chance to learn more about the Industrial Design & Human Factors Engineering function within a global manufacturing organisation. Because the team serves the rest of the business with specialist advise, you will have the opportunity to work with several product divisions.

This role will involve working as part of a team as well as individually to problem solve while being involved in early-stage product design/development. You will gain exposure to industrial design and ergonomic techniques used at Renishaw, communicating your thoughts and ideas using a range of methods and tools including digital sketches, CAD and prototypes.

What will I be doing?

The team works on a range of different projects, including early concept design and related activities such as problem definition, idea generation, concept formation and selection. Some concepts will need prototyping and detail design.  To achieve this, we use various methods as part of a User Centred Design or Design Thinking approach. Ideas and results are communicated through digital sketches, prototyping and technical reports.

To achieve our sustainability goals, we are implementing the use of Design for Circularity methods and tools, which you will gain exposure to in your design work and can help promote within the business.

You will be trained in the use of an ergonomic simulation CAD tool and expected to analyse the ergonomics of design concepts with the support of experienced ergonomists and relevant standards.

The team is developing guidelines for a Visual Brand Identity by analysing existing product designs and feeding the results into the product expressions of new designs. Specific tasks will be tailored depending on the candidate’s interests, experience, and available work at the time.

What skills and experience do I need?

While you will be supported by more senior colleagues, this is a customer facing role where you need to enjoy interviewing product users and stake holders, as well as presenting your ideas to our internal customers.

Preferably, you are studying for a degree in Product/Industrial Design Engineering or equivalent discipline. You may also come from a human factors/ergonomics background. Ideally, you have:

  • an understanding of product design methods and how to apply them in an engineering context/
  • a passion for user-centred design or experience of ergonomic assessment.
  • experience with Siemens NX, NX Human/JACK/Process simulate, Adobe CC, digital sketching, though training can be provided.
  • proven aptitude for problem solving and the ability to develop solutions for complex problems
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • a can-do attitude is a must and DfC experience would be a bonus.

Where will I be working?

This role is based at our New Mills headquarters near Wotton-under-Edge in Gloucestershire, you may on occasion be required to travel to other Renishaw sites for work. As Renishaw is based in a semi-rural location, it is essential that applicants have their own form of transport or be willing to relocate to the local area.

When you join Renishaw, we're committing to your future career. That's because we believe in developing our people's skills and promoting them internally. We also offer a benefits package that's highly desirable; including a 9% non-contributory pension, discretionary annual bonus, *subsidised onsite restaurants and *coffee shops, free parking, *car sharing scheme and *24 hour fitness centres. (*not available at our Castle Donington, Exeter, York & Edinburgh sites)

We also want to promote a healthy work-life balance as much as possible, so we have introduced a Homeworking policy which allows for a combination of home and office based working depending on the nature of your role. We also offer a variable working programme, 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, Life Assurance Policy of 4 times annual salary, Cycle to Work scheme, enhanced maternity pay subject to qualifying criteria, the option to join BUPA Renishaw health trust and an Employee Assistance Programme for employees and family.

We've signed the Gradcracker feedback pledge.

(This means that we will supply feedback if requested after an interview.)
