Jack Baker

Engineer

My career at WEC started during my final year of university, where I worked as a part-time Engineering Intern alongside my Aerospace Engineering degree. From day one, I was able to get involved in a variety of technical activities, with full support from my colleagues. Throughout my Internship, I learnt key skills from industry which helped compliment my studies and inspire my university projects!

I then continued my development with WEC by joining the WEC Graduate Scheme. This involved a 2-year structured training programme involving a series of training sessions whilst on-the-job learning. During this time, I experienced a wide range of tasks involving Fluid Mechanical Systems, Control & Indication (C&I) Systems, and Simulation/Modelling activities. I was able to discover which tasks I particularly enjoyed and began developing a focus on C&I Systems.

Having completed the WEC Graduate Scheme, I have since progressed from a ‘Graduate Engineer’ to an ‘Engineer’. I have built upon my specialism in C&I systems but have still had the opportunity to work on projects and develop my skills in other areas. My next steps are to further my skills and expertise to achieve a ‘Senior Engineer’ status, whilst also working towards Chartership. I am also excited by the new opportunities and challenges that a global focus on ‘greener’ technology will have to offer in the industry!

There is a great culture at WEC, where everyone is very friendly and willing to help each other out. Due to the variety of projects worked on, and combined years of experience, there is always someone available to ask for advice if needed. I like being able to work within many different teams on several projects at once, whilst maintaining an overall drive for teamwork and collaboration throughout the whole company. There are also many opportunities to travel to Customer sites and also between WEC offices.

I would recommend WEC to anyone wishing to develop and apply their skills across many different disciplines of Engineering, in a company that has such a friendly and fun, yet professional atmosphere.
